What to buy in Tesco Value Range

I have used value stuffing but have added 'sweated' finely chopped onion, bit more sage and an egg to make it a bit richer.0

We had Tesco value tomato soup for lunch, cost 18p. I read the contents, 49% tomato puree. This means in every half tin portion of 200gs, the tomato content is just under 100gs. A portion of F&V is 60gs so it is 1.4 portions for 9p.
I think it's very good. It also tastes v.similar/the same as Heinz.
Once again the value range strikes a winner.0 -
But isn't Heinz tomato soup made from tomatoes?
Don't get me wrong - they're both far removed nutritionally from homemade tomato soup but, to me, the value one sounds like a more processed product. I always have a couple of tins of tomato soup in for when one of the kids comes in and needs something hot and filling in five minutes flat and we only seem to have bread. Usually have Heinz because I stock up when there's a promotion. Tomato soup is the only soup anyone will eat from a tin in this house.
Don't mean to sound sharp - just don't think they sound the same.0 -
My DS2 will only eat tinned soup:rolleyes: not home-made and he loves the value one :T I'm the oposite - got to be HM for me!Do what you love :happyhear0

I find it difficult to get my head around one tin of soup being more processed than another!
Of course Heinz tomato soup is made from tomatoes, but last time I looked it was not 18pence. My point is that the cheaper value soup still gives more than one portion of veg per 200g serving. I found it very little different from Heinz. I did not compare the list of ingredients. However, here are those on the value soup tin.
tomato puree - 49%
water
reconstituted whey powder (from milk)
modified maize starch
sugar
vegetable oil
salt
onion powder
yeast extract
acidity regulater (citric acid)
paprika
flavouring
mustard flour
I would be interested to compare these with those on the Heinz tin.
Just checked the Tesco site for the price of Heinz tomato soup - pack of 4 x 400g tins £2, so 50p a tin.0 -

Yes, I agree!
A tin of tomatoes isn't the same as a tin of tomato puree, though. That's all I was saying! Tomato soup isn't a value item in our house - those that eat it don't like it although it's a long time since we tried it. Value baked beans, on the other hand, are preferred to own brand and regarded as an acceptable alternative to Heinz.0 -

My point was not to tell everyone they MUST eat value tomato soup. It was simply to say that it gave more than one portion of veg for 9p. I only mentioned tomato puree because it is on the list of ingredients.0 -

I understand - it's just me. I can't get my head round the fact that fruit or veg that's been sitting in a can, for god knows how long, can count as a portion of fruit or veg. But you're absolutely right, it does.0
