Are people really this sneeky and nasty

If I was the buyer in question someone sending me mails disparaging your products and making out theirs are better would have the opposite effect. I can make my own decisions (ie your products) and would suspect they must be quite desperate and have an inferior product or they wouldn't have to resort to this.

Lost my reply there. Well it certainly worked that way for my customer

I have got over it now, I can see that this person did feel threatened by my products enough to do such a silly thing so they must be good!!

The elite sellers of eBay, also known as the Powersellers are nothing short of maniacal megalomaniacs. They regularly partake in belittling each other and go to extreme lengths to get one over on competitors. If you have made it to Powersellers status go check out the forum and you'll see what I mean. Several times eBay staff have stepped in and closed threads down and warned sellers.

The bottom line is, eBay is bad for your health, if you let it get to you that is.

There is a huge amount of hostility on the PS Board I agree, but there is a seemingly unwritten rule in that nobody criticises any body else product lines.
There is a lot of criticism and button pushing on listing policy breaches, but I've yet to see anyone say "you sell a load of carp".
Thinking about it, most of the hostility comes from non-ebay related threads - the usual politics, religion, current affairs etc, although there are still some that like to stir up trouble at any opportunity.

Back to the OP - I'd be flattered that somebody considers you such a threat that they are contacting your customers, but also heed it as a warning that somebody is watching and waiting for you to make a false move, and would have no hesitation in reporting your listings.

It is auction interference, but it will be your customer that should report it, as you have not been contacted directly. If you list using BIN, then private listings will be a great help, but be cautious of using private listings on auctions - many people associate this with trying to hide shill bidding.

I'd feel exactly the same, being harassed by unsolicited emails just puts my back up & would make me determined not to buy from a seller who's doing the equivalent of spamming

& their communications would go straight in the Vviaagra/Viiaggra/V**gr* bin

don't worry OP, they're just jealous/afraid

also if trade is going well and you are getting repeat customers then consider setting up your own website
far better if you can start generating sales that way through your repeat customers and word spreading

I had no idea ebay was so complicated but I am learning! Today I am feeling a lot better about it all and agree that someone is really worried that my items maybe competition for them. Fancy going to all tht trouble!

When my soap started selling on ebay so well so quickly I was really excited about it, I have spent so much time and money and 'thinking time' studying it and practiced it for so long and have done several courses to make sure I don't kill anyone etc and I like my things and so do my family and friends and the people I have sold to at a local farmer's market etc where I can tell them all about it but to have so many 'complete strangers' rave about it has made me think that perhaps I have got it right and I do love doing it.

I was told that ebay was a community but I can see now that it is as cut throat as everything else business.

I don't like the idea of private lisitngs I just want to be open and honest I have nothing to hide, I have no idea what shill listing is but I am sure I will learn all the horrible things eventually

I agree I would hate it if someone contacted me like that it would put me right off and luckily my lovely customer felt the same

I have got someone helping me set up a website now, ebay was supoosed to be a practice to see if I could do it and to see if my things would sell before I spent the money on a website I expect when it is up and running I will just list a few things on ebay and concentrate on the website. Oh dear something else to learn - I just want to make soap how did it all get so complicated!
