Are people really this sneeky and nasty

I have been buying from ebay for sometime, I find that easy! I make handmade soap and other similar items and for the last 7 weeks I have been selling them on ebay, finally got the hang of selling.
I have done really well, I am amazed how much I have sold and have not only got great feedback but as well I have been getting emails from people saying they love my stuff and some people are buying so much I think they must have more soap than me now! I love making my products and feel quite possessive about them and I am thrilled when people say they like them
I have just had an email from someone who has very quickly become a regular customer and we have got to know each other, exchanging emails. She has just told me that she has had an email from someone who has said that their products are better than mine and suggesting that she buys theirs instead. I am shocked and feel quite upset. I am waiting for her to tell me more details, exactly what has been said etc
Do people really do things like this? I look at other people's soap etc just out of curiosity but I would never do this. If your stuff is good it will sell, if it isn't it won't it's as simple as that.
I wonder what ebay's view is of this sort of thing, is there anything i can do?
Does anyone else agree that this behaviour is pretty low or am I being too sensitive?

I wouldn't worry. Don't take it to heart, just keep selling and ignore the people who have negative comments to say. You'll ALWAYS get these people on eBay.

I agree with above dont take it to heart. I sell craft items and am quite a bit cheaper on most of my products, I have had some people who sell the same stuff as me buy from me then put in a claim. You can pretty much tell its going to happen but theres nothing much you can do about it.
Ebay is an extremeley competetive marketplace.
It sounds like you have a great product and good customer service so just keep going, the lovely ebayers you meet far make up for the one or two bad people you come across and some customers are very loyal and tell there friends and family if they find something good.0 -
There's a simple reason the other seller sent that message: They're scared of you being competition to them.
Basically, keep doing as you are, and good luck with your business

Thank everyone for your replies I think it is my lack of experience. When I buy, I bid, pay for it and that's that.
Up until now everyone on ebay has been so nice, taking so much trouble to tell me how much they like my products and buying so much, I have found it all to be very exciting after all my hard work learning how to do it and hoping that someone would like it. However much I think my stuff is good, although I just love making it all, it is not until you sell like this that you know for sure it it any good and it is quite nervewraking and I was amazed that someone could be so sneeky and underhand. Like most crafts items my things are different to any others I have seen so I don't see myself as competition to anyone, I am not afraid of competion at all. I am sure that there are many people who don't like my stuff and will buy this person's stuff.
Thank you all for being so supportiveLoretta0 -
Strictly speaking, this seller is a) sending unsolicited messages, ie. spamming, and b) badmouthing you directly, ie. auction interference. These are reportable offences - but I believe the recipient of the message has to do the reporting. My TV is broken!

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -
the seller is competitive but is being devious rather than letting sales do the talking. when two products are different it is personal opinion which is better. I prefer mars bar over snickers but i'm sure there are others who don't share my opinion. Don't let yourself feel down about it.

Ask your friend/customer to report the mail to eBay, I'm sure it must breach some rule or other.
In the meantime, keep providing excellent product and service and let your feedback do the talking.0 -

You have said what I was trying to say, thank you. With craft stuff probably everything that is made is probably different and you either like it or you don't and that's it
I prefer mars bars too I can't see the point of the nuts in snickers!Loretta0 -

I agree with everyone else, just ignore them, they obviously feel threatened by you
And no, no, no Snickers every time
You're only young once, but you can be immature forever
