Please would you explain why you feel working part time and taking benefits to make up the money is an ok thing to do? I really don’t understand when this came around? Fully understand the job situation is a nightmare out there – although have at times worked 2 jobs myself, sometimes finishing at 2am. I’ve also worked shifts through the night and I’ve worked 70 hour weeks. If you are ill or have a small child that is one thing (and surely that is who the benefits system is designed to help) – but I never thought of choice as being a factor? Surely anyone would want something better out of life than relying on benefits? Surely no one would want to bring up a child in that way, showing them nothing better than this a life sitting on your bum watching Sky? You say someone working part time would pay some tax – no doubt, but also taking it back in other benefits? I am really starting to despair for the future – is this what we have become?0

It shouldn't be a question of personal choice as to whether you claim benefits or you work to support yourself, the benefits system is there for people who need it rather than those who are too lazy to be self supporting.
As to paying a few quid out for tax and NICs when you're only working part time and thinking you have some sort of right to get the same money back as benefits, how would this work if everyone were to do the same?
Quite frankly, your attitude stinks!0 -

Yes I don't want to be claiming for part of my rent to be paid but I DON'T have a choice 4 years and counting for a local authority house and the way the climate is just now with people losing their houses etc they become a priority so my guess it will be another 4years! The only other benefits someone single, working PT and renting private would be claiming is HB and maybe CTB (25% discount for sure). As has previously been pointed out they don't work enough hours to qualify fot WTC and work too many hours to qualify for IS!0 -

I don't know where you're getting a figure of 9 years from!
I do wish people on here would stop seeing the benefits system as their personal little pot that they've paid into and can now choose to draw from. Some of us are getting fed up telling others how the benefits sytem actually works!:mad:0 -
Still haven't said why someone who is capable of doing so doesn't work full time?? Why don't they look to work full time? Why is ok to take everyone else's money??
Excellent point Oldernotwiser its all take take take.
Actually as you are determined to comment on your circumstances (I didn't) you do have a choice - you could work f/t or study for something - it would be the ideal time to do so - by the time your child goes to school you would be ready to go to work & support yourself and the child!! ok, now you shout your head off at the very idea.....0 -
Thread reported !It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.0

For saying someone has a choice? For suggesting they support themselves? For asking why its ok to take benefits without working?? Interesting viewpoint....another one who is unable to engage...0
