It is very sensible to have some kind of list and photos of unusual or valuable items. If your house burnsor you have a major break in it is very difficult to remember exactly what you had and what has gone missing. It can also be difficult to prove you owned the items.

It is wise to do a spread sheet noting you major items and summarising other items eg 10 x t shirts etc. It also helps if you either take photos of each room and any major items as well. It iis best to keep these off site eg your parents home so if you do have a major fire the records are not damaged.

As well as helping remind you of what you had, it assists the Insurers / helps prove you had the items and very helpfully it can help the police as the items may turn up at the other end of the country so they note them on their central computers which can help reunite the items with you and can help as prove if they catch someone and want prove the items they have are not theirs

dacouch, thanks again for great advise. I started to write a list of items and it's amazing how soon it adds up, I did try to be thorough and it's a work in progress but ensured I didn't forget to add things such as DVD players, Printer, etc

I plan to give this to and photos to a family member and possibly email it to my hotmail account aswell so I could access it from anywhere easily if needed

    Thanks again!

It might seem hard work but it really is invaluable if you ever have a big claim, it will also be an eye opener when you realise how inadequate the £30000 cover you had before was.

Bear in mind Insurers pay on a "New for Old" basis so it is the new cots of everything you need to add up

When you add up freezers, fridges, tvs, etc it can definately all add up - I've compiled the list - just need to tot up the clothes, shoes, etc as some things are branded such as quicksilver, french connection, etc

If your not sure what is contents and what is buildings as a very rough rule of thumb (There are exceptions), if you turn the house upside down anything that moves is contents.

Carpets and white goods are contents but built in appliances are generally buildings as well as fittted wardrobes and fitted kitchens etc. Laminate flooring is generally classed as building.

Well done for your list it will save you a lot of time and trouble if you ever have a claim plus Lisyloo will be proud of you.

P.S If you get a chance its worth noting the serial numbers of your televisions, computers and the like and if possible buy a UV pen (They are a couple of squid) and mark you house number and post code on the bottom of things that a thief would go for.

It would be interesting if you let us know roughly how much your contents come to as it may help other MSE members in a similar position to you!

Don't forget to add major purchases to you list in the future and index link it to keep it up to date.

Excellent, you made me laugh when I read this :rotfl::rotfl:

On a more serious note I'll tot it all up and report back - might take me a while!

Will definately invest in a UV Pen and appreciate the suggestion, will try and find somewhere that sells these..

When looking at costs for example a washing machine - is this contents? and would I need to look at the the price to purchase a brand new one when I tot up costs? Can't actually remember what I paid but it was from John Lewis and they are pretty good for keeping records and I probably have a reciept somewhere..

The turning the house upside down is how we describe contents to punters!

They sometimes have the UV pens in Poundland or Wilkinsons otherwise Whsmiths and Staples etc will sell them

Your washing machine is contents unless its built in and / or bolted in, you need to insure for the replacement cost. (It would be wise to note the make and model of the washing machine on your list)

When your calculating your contents make estimates (On the high side) and then you can add an additional margin for error at the end.

Have a read of this link about Under Insurance (They refer to it as the "Average Clause") and you will see the importance of not being under insured

I was insured for Motor with LV. Had 2 claims. One went well, the other was a nightmare which was entirely LV's fault. I guess they are not the best or the worst. If they have given you a good quote then may as well go with them. At least you speak to people in the UK !

Just had my buildings renewal from LV, up 10% on last year. Problem is that as we have had a subsidence claim in the past, no other insurer is interested even though the 'insurance industry' has made good the subsidence ! A complete joke only I'm not laughing !

Is the bathroom suite and kitchen units covered under buildings for accidential damage in this case..?
