£30000 is below what most of the surveys find is the amount of contents the average family has which is around £420000

Thank you dacouch, appreciated :A I would rather be slightly overinsured than under!
I have headache from looking for quotes this morning . Renewal date is 01/09/09! Was considering renewing with LV from last year but I'm not sure if this is such a good idea if they don't handle their own contents directly and there are 3rd parties involved..
decouch are there any B&C that provide better service than others at the moment? Sheila's Wheels & Esure seem to come up quite alot recently..This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
LV are not bad, most Insurers will try and recommend an outside contractor like Homeserve, you do not always have to use them (Its normally best to use a local contractor)0

Thanks dacouch, with LV I'm not sure if you have to use Homeserve or if you have the choice to use a local contractor. I doubt I can apply through Quidco to use them either as I did this last year (although that's not the basis I'll make my choice on, it will just be a bonus!)
Got a quote from More than and it was £237.76, you get Quidco aswell but not 100% sure it would track and this is higher than the quote from LVThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Have you tried ringing LV and advising them you have a cheaper quote that offers say £50000 contents cover. A lot of Insurers will match or knock some more money off the premium if you ring them0
-
I called them and they have offered £158.93 for £40,000 contents and blanket £1million buildings, inc legal cover for £50k. I have :-
a) saved money - approx £10
b) got £10k extra contents inc taking it from £30k to £40k for the lower price
The previous quote for £30k contents was £168.46
Not sure I will beat this quote from anyone else and they said they are open tomorrow so can call back and go ahead with it
I should have asked the cost for £50k contents cover - won't be much more I wouldn't have thought and didn't remember to do this when i called todayThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Hi miguel franco, thanks for your post - are you with LV and did they allow you to use a local contractor over Homeserve? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Called them and they applied an additional discount and gave me £15k extra cover on contents.
It was £146.25 without £50k legal cover
Or £160.53 with £50k legal cover
So I didn't get the legal cover...
Considering original quote was £168.46 with legal cover, £30k contents that's not too bad..
Thanks dacouch :A
p.s. I did try to change the policy to £50k contents however the lady said an alarm comes up and it states you need to have an alarm fitted, are there any companies that have a good reputation that I can use or good makes of alarms you can fit yourself...
I'll be doing some searching on this next as it's on my To Do list!! Along with Annual Travel Cover!
I was abit unsure about taking legal cover off, but they said if I change my mind I can add it back at any time..This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
A tip for the future when that happens is to go for say £49000 and it will be below the amount required for an alarm (Or £1000 under whatever figure they say the alarm kicks in at.
Well done though for getting your price down and more importantly getting a more realistic sum insured, very MSE0 -
Thank dacouch - excellent tip aswell, I hadn't thought of trying that when I was on the phone to them.
For contents insurance, do most people keep a list of what they own as currently I don't have anything like this and it's kind of hard to work out what value to go for to ensure you're covered. I'm really not one for gold, expensive art, etc so it is pretty much sofa, tv, clothes, etc that cover is for - not to forget a cupboard full of shoesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
