In that case, coming up here to live, not knowing the area well at all... perhaps you'd be best of renting for a while.

That would allow you time to settle and familiarise yourself with surrounding areas.

    Lets say.. £8K for a year's rent.

Unless you think the crash will have ended by then, or agree with my outlook that sellers will have dropped asking prices or be more eager to accept lower offers.

I said in my original post we could rent. This move is not going to happen tomorrow, we're in the early stages of researching the area before committing.

I would definitely rent for a while, although a semi in a south Manchester suburb would be £600 plus a month. The outlying areas like Leigh or Droylsden will always be cheaper to buy in but the commute will be longer. From Droylsden you have to cross the town centre or go around on the M60.

It probably won't matter for now but Trafford MBC still has the 11 plus exam which you would take if you lived in Stretford, Urmston, Sale etc.. You could eventually do to be near a good secondary school like Ashton on Mersey high school.

I would rent then see how the market looks in 6 months or so - you would be settled into your job and may well get a 3 bed semi in a good area by then. What if you buy and then don't like your job?

I'm not changing jobs, I'm relocating. I'm a company director for an internet service company, we have constructed our own data centre in Stretford (https://www.manchesterdc.com) and moving our servers from London up to the new facility.

How about something a bit further out but probably alot nicer. Knutsford, Macclesfield, Frodsham, Congleton, Bramhall, New Mills, Sandbach, Northwich or Stockton Heath for example? All close to motorways etc.
  • Hi again OP, I would still recommend Ashton, Droylesden and Denton for price and not being bad areas from what I've seen/heard. I think spuds gives good advice there about Trafford and the 11 plus. If I were you, at the mo, I would look in cheaper areas with a view to moving to Trafford for the secondary schools in future. With regard to Heaton Chapel, on rightmove I can only find 7 properties in your price range, compared to many in cheaper areas suggested.

Very quick post. Will PM you tomorrow. I am a tutor based in Trafford. Mainly doing 11+ type of work. Trafford now has an entrance exam system which has complicated things a bit. What ages are your children?

I live quite near the Moss Vale road house so tomorrow I will go for a wander. Moss Vale Road is in two parts-one is fine and the other well.........
Anyway, didn't want to read and run.
Will report tomorrow(ils like being a spy really:rotfl: just go and get my dirty raincoat:rotfl: )
Blind as you run...aware you were staring at the sun.

And when no hope was left inside on that starry starry night.

    :A Level 42- the reason I exist. :A

You would only be able to include Stockton Heath in the 40 min rule. My husband used to teach in Macclesfield and from Urmston it took over 1 hour. Also the prices in places like Knutsford amd Macc property prices are MUCH higher.

Stay in Trafford - recce the nice areas where the tram stops so Sale, Timperley, Altrincham are my recommendations. Beyond is Hale & Bowden but I think that the latter two will be out of budget but extremely nice to visit!
