Moving to Manchester or areas surrounding

Hello,
Due to work commitments, I'm making a move from Luton up to the Manchester area, with the misses and young baby in tow.
I'm looking for opinions on areas to live. We do not want to be living in Manchester proper, one of the surrounding areas, Leigh is one choice. I'll need to be within 40 mins of "Ball Green, Stretford" (building's post code does not register, its a new complex).
3+ bed property, detached or semi. Budget not to exceed £150k. Any ideas?
We could also rent in the suggested areas if our own property doesn't sell.

I live in a Salford, hold on before you run a mile it is not as bad as you think, yes it has a bad rep but there are great areas. I live in a place called Monton and the surrounding areas are fantastic, cheap houses, great schools and nursery as well as easy links to the motorway and public transport.
Let me know if you would like to ask any further questions danjames90 at hotmail dot com.
Good luck0 -
Hi,
I live in Golborne which is near Leigh but used to live in Eccles which is also in Salford near Monton. We mved to Golborne about 2 years ago and really like it. Its very convenient for the Motorway and East Lancs and the house prices are cheap. if you need more info PM me

Stockport? Right on the M60.0

Timperley's quite a nice area, and not too far from Stretford. Also on the tram, so good links into town.
What are you looking for from the area?0 -

3+ bedrooms, 4 if budget allows. Smallish garden. Semi or detached (currently living in a semi). Not interested in a total wreck, but not adverse to some modernisation. Must have good parking. Garage if possible. A new build is appealing, depending on quality and who the builder is. Need to be relatively close to facilities, nursery being the main requirement. Good public transport links into Manchester / surrounding bigger towns will be required for my partner, as she doesn't currently drive and will be seeking employment.0 -
I suggest Salford too actually. I moved from London about two years ago and love it. I live just between Monton and Eccles and the public transport links aren't too bad (though the problem in Manchester is that, although the links are excellent, you might have to wait a while because it's not the most reliable). Eight minutes into Manchester city centre on the train but it's only once an hour, or about 20 on the bus (30 in rush hour)Goals for 2010 - pay off £3160 debt. Come on Pamela!0

Stretford itself is on the metro route that runs from Altrincham, through Sale and into Manchester. Property in Altrincham and Sale can be expensive. Urmston (next to Stretford) is a nice area and more reasonably priced. Also has a train link into Manchester.0

Stretford is good. I live in Stockport, also brilliant but Stretford is closer to where you need to be0

Leigh is depressing I can't get out of here quick enough. If you like sunbeds, steroids, slappers, rugby, lobby, chavs and inbreeding then you're onto a winner.
Bear in mind that it's the biggest town in the UK (or something like that) without a train station, this should give you an idea of how inbred the place is. They 'don't leek art-sarders rarnd ere'
The locals here turned down a syperb complex with cinema's and stuff called the Xanadu cos apparently it would have spoilt the local wildlife. There is plenty of wildlife round here but it isn't pleasant and is usually only found round barbarellas or pulp on a saturday night
But hey, we've got local celebrities Wally the fat taxi man and shandy bass for you to meet
The traffic down the east lancs in the morning isn't great either0
