We live in Urmston and I honestly don't think you would get many 3+semis for under £150k. The upside to Urmston is your journey to Stretford would be about 10-15 mins and there are some very good nurseries in the area(so I am told) although the schools are another matter(they vary wildly can supply further info if needed)
Sale is very nice but pricey. Before I got married I had a house in Eccles and taught in Salford, I might be biased but I love Salford and would completely recommend it. As with most areas there are some areas best avoided but overall well worth a look.
Eccles, Swinton and Monton all well worth a look. Also Irlam have various new builds that seem decent . Your journey from Irlam would be about 15-20 mins.
Any further information please don't hesitate ask. Hope this is of some use to you. Good luck.

Leigh is depressing I can't get out of here quick enough. If you like sunbeds, steroids, slappers, rugby, lobby, chavs and inbreeding then you're onto a winner.

Bear in mind that it's the biggest town in the UK (or something like that) without a train station, this should give you an idea of how inbred the place is. They 'don't leek art-sarders rarnd ere'

The locals here turned down a syperb complex with cinema's and stuff called the Xanadu cos apparently it would have spoilt the local wildlife. There is plenty of wildlife round here but it isn't pleasant and is usually only found round barbarellas or pulp on a saturday night

But hey, we've got local celebrities Wally the fat taxi man and shandy bass for you to meet

  • Hi OP, have you looked at East Manchester: Ashton, Denton, Droylsden etc? Within your price range there appear to be quite a few nice looking 3 bed terraces/semis. Never lived in any of these locations myself, but I know people who do and they haven't talked down the areas. Have a look on rightmove if you're interested.

Yes, particularly popular with the dogging community as well!

Heaton Chapel would be my recommendation.

Give it a search on Rightmove.

Do those up north only come online from 8.30PM, loads of replies within the last 30 mins :p

3+ bedrooms, 4 if budget allows. Smallish garden. Semi or detached (currently living in a semi). Not interested in a total wreck, but not adverse to some modernisation. Must have good parking. Garage if possible. A new build is appealing, depending on quality and who the builder is. Need to be relatively close to facilities, nursery being the main requirement. Good public transport links into Manchester / surrounding bigger towns will be required for my partner, as she doesn't currently drive and will be seeking employment.
Not sure how many areas you will get all those requirements in your price range TBH. House prices haven't come down as much in Manchester as in other areas, and you might find that houses that do come under £150k are in less desirable areas.

Just had a quick look on rightmove. There are a few houses in Heaton Chapel (part of Stockport) which look about the right sort of thing. I'm from Stockport originally and the schools are pretty good, generally quite nice area and likely to be a few good nurseries nearby. Some parts of Stockport are a nightmare to commute from, anything further down the A6 means major traffic queues, but the Heatons are more accessible.

If public transport is a priority, then try looking up and down the tram line, as people have mentioned, Stretford is on the tram, and this means good links into the centre. Altrincham is nice in parts, but would have to look around to see what can be got for £150k.

Its true that house prices here in Manchester haven't dropped widly, yet .
I live in Chorlton and rent.
Buying here is pricey but is very close to Stretford.
Who knows what the market will look like in 12-18 months.

BTW,I am a salford girl, and biased about it there too :)

To give people an indication of what I'm seeing on searches, couple of properties that appeal (purely based on their Rightmove listing):

The few I've checked are all in skanky areas - but if that suits you, when for the same money you can buy a fine house in a better area, so be it.

I have no idea of the areas, hence why I asked for opinions. The properties I listed are in locations situated by people.
