Ames, if you apply for DSA then they may be able to get you the texts earlier if reading may take you a bit longer due to fatigue. Worth asking, my old uni did it for me.

Oooh thanks for that Gemmzie, didn't think about that. Although I can't register for the course till October, can't afford to pay for it till then. I need to apply for DSA though cos my computer's on it's last legs and my next course is all cdrom based, no books.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Definitely, they have the most amazing equipment available, I couldn't have done half my studying without it. There's computer programmes which can read to you (great when you're exhausted) and you can speak to the computer (ideal when you can't type). Stands for books. Seriously, they can do loads so get the application in ASAP!

Do you know much about this DSA? I have an underactive thyroid and although I take Thyroxine to control the effects, I struggle to study. What are the benefits of applying and would I be able to?

Sorry if I'm butting in, re the computer, if you need a disability assestment they may recommend a laptop, are you paying for all of the course or a partial amount - if the latter, you can apply for the computer grant think is £250, and then ur student grant for the year to top it up x

I've got the full funding for one year. I'm taking a history course in October. With what's left of my financial award, and the £255 grant, and a top up from me, I'm going to do a literature course in February. I want to do both history and literature degrees and this seems the cheapest way.

I can't get the computer grant because I'm eligible for DSA. I haven't applied for the last two years, because I couldn't think of what help I could need other than a computer. It didn't occur to me to think about book stands and software and things.

I'll apply this week, thanks all.

Does anyone know how many times you can apply for the computer grant? I was awarded one two years ago which I used to buy my laptop, Hoping to carry on studying next year but worried about my laptop dying and not being able to replace it, would I be eligible again by next year at all?

I know a little, but only from having a fantastic Disability support through my old university.

Definitely apply, it's based on your needs rather than disability. Focuses on how to make studying easier for you so you aren't disadvantaged by your illness.
