I bought some cheap compost from poundstretcher last year. Left it in the bag for a few weeks, with the result that when I used it there was a lot of cooch grass (or similar) in it. Not too much though, but it made me think twice for the future.

I think this is only really a bargain if you want very small amounts to be honest - I wouldn't pay 4.9p per litre!

i'm going to need quite a bit though, and i buy the 70 litre bags 3 for £10 which works out at £3.33 (.333333)p per 70 litre bag. the poundstretcher ones would work out at £3.43p per 70 litres... so no saving doing it that way.

however, like i say, if you don't need the 210 litres lol.. then it works out brilliant! great find!

Hi - Just got back from B&Q and they were doing 20 litre bags at 99p.
I think previous poster is right and that tends to be going rate although i bought 4 bags to plant up my veg seeds in as I prefer to use fresh compost for seeds.

Nice thing about smaller bags is they are more managable.
Last year I bought the 100 litre compressed bags - cheap but hard work to move about.

Sometimes with moneysaving its worth spending a bit more on compost and saving the chiropracter bill.

People seem to be very defensive about my comment.

Just to clarify I said I thought it was a bargain if you only want small amounts. I didn't say it's not a bargain - I was just pointing out that if you need bigger quanitites it works out cheaper to buy elsewhere. We get a huge number of newbies who don't really know how much these things cost and what is a reasonable price to pay, and I didn't want them to get the impression that this is a good price for all of their compost needs. I was mindful that a lot of people have been asking about establishing their own raised beds in recent weeks and for these people, this offer works out a very expensive way of doing things.

If you do need larger quantities, most garden centres and DIY places have 3 for £10 on 65-80l bags, it varies from place to place. With no immediate need to buy, I'm afraid I don't know precisely where the best offers are at the moment.
If you need large amounts (establishing new beds or an allotment) many councils also supply municipal compost that has been made with the 'green waste' collections. Prices very from council to council, if you call yours they will tell you if they supply it and how much they charge. Often they will deliver it too, but you'll need a place for them to dump it and a wheelbarrow to move it to where you want it.
