I have doubts about exterior insulation. To be effective it would need to be 100mm (4") thick and each interlocking slab would need to be screwed into the wall at probably four points plus side and bottom/top guides plus extenders at doors and windows. Can't see these weak points ever standing up to time and weather.

External wall installation ( ewi) as we call it , basically bond slabs of insulative board to the wall , mechanically fix then cover it with 2 thin coats of polyimer render. Dead easy . Current rate is £130 per square meter which is never going to be economical for the average home owner unless its grant assisted .Which is why we never do it on anything other than social housing. Secondly, theres a major sercurity risk with it , with a hammer and a decent pair of boots ,you could knock holes in it and make yourself a ladder. On top of all that ,if your walls were constructed using a lime based product , you will end up with damp problems on the inside.
  • I am also having problems finding anyone that will offer this. I have rang EON and they are not intersted if you are not in social housing. Read al the stuff online and trhough ECO and the Carbon Saving Obligation it is the house that qualifies for the grant, although this won't be 100% if you are not on benifits. This is fine but I can't find anyone that is offering it. The energy saving trust has confirmed that we should be able to get it but doesn't seem to have a list of companies offering it which is not that helpful. Has anyone managed to get a grant for this yet, internal or external?
  • I have been contacting so called solid wall insulation companies these last 2 months, they all advertise that they can do it, but this is just a ploy to get you to have something else done , like boiler, loft or cavity wall insulation, I need solid wall insulation. I'm pretty sure as time goes by we will get it done, but I was hoping before this winter, it would have been ideal, no luck, maybe next year, but then again, I've been saying that for the past 3 years.
  • We had EWI put on our house just over 2 years ago, i wish it had`nt been done.
Within 6 months my bathroom ceiling and walls were mouldy, LHA stuck insulated plasterboard over the top of the ceiling, The humidity levels in the house have doubled, me and my husband have felt "bunged up" and the house has never felt this cold in all the 19 years we have lived here. Apparently we need more ventilation so the house can breathe. LHA put trickle vents in all the windows but its made no difference..
  • Who is LHA? I think this is more likely that the work was not done properly, rather then the EWI being a problem.
  • Gentoo, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear ..

you've blocked up any chance of the house breathing, and its rotting away behind all that insulation.

By far the best way to insulate solid walls is to do it from the inside.

Baffled by all these posters failing to get a company to install external insulation. Just contact a general builder.

This sort of construction is going to be standard on new-builds within 10 years.

Which causes interstitial condensation - and the "rotting" you mention. The moisture comes from within the house.
