Solid Wall Insulation

Hi,
We just got a grant from energy saving trust (I am self employed and on maternity leave, therefore getting benefits just now). They gave us £4,000 towards a new boiler and £4,000 for solid wall insulation. We got a quote for our house for the solid wall insulation, which was around £8,000, however what has put me off is that we would have to entirely re-decorate and you can't wallpaper any of the insulated walls. I have decided to only do the parts of the house that have been extended because they have no loft access and it is unknown how much insulation was installed (if any). We are using a system called IQ therm as the reviews we have seen seem all good. If I wasn't getting a grant I wouldn't be bothering, you seemingly only save £240 per year, and to do the whole house would be £8,000, it just isn't worth it! I am really looking forward to getting my new boiler though - the old one is held together with lolly sticks, elastic bands and super glue! It is either on 'fiery furnace' or off 'baltic'!!!
Hope this helps!0 -
Anyone aware of ££s grants to help towards solid wall insulation? The last I saw on Money Saving Expert.com website dates back Sept 2006!!! Anything newer by any chance? :T

We have done the walls of our house which are solid wall and we spent £8,000 like you but had only £350 grant. How did you get that much? We are retired with benefits... Chantal0

Sadly not much of a grant I been checking several times over the years. Only grant is available is a a product called sematap it is a foam wall covering and it will costs around £1,600 to install
Next year changes where you can get a grant for insulation but any savings on energy bills you make go towards paying for it, its attached to the property the loan0 -

TWITTER @stonefxwalls they seem to offer a 40% discount for external insulation with either, brick, stone or flat rendered finishes in lime based stuff. The job is quite extensive as window cills, down spouts, pipes, reveals etc have to be moved or extended. Seems to me that stopping the cold coming into the building structure is better than stopping from the inside walls..... makes your exterior look like new too I guess.0

Before I start, I have searched and nothing came up on this subject.
There is lots about Cavity Wall & Loft Insulation, but I can find nothing about solid walls.
I'm searching the web & have sent off some exploratory emails but thought I would ask in here.
Has anyone had this done, and was it worthwhile?
Does anyone know if any grants are available for solid wall insulation?
Cheers!0 -

yes if you can hang on a few years, in theory many homes will have to get this work done and economies of scale will hopefully bring the price down.0 -
I hope this isn't a stupid question, but what happens when they get to roof level if you get external insulation? Do they somehow extend your roof, soffits and gutters 2"+? Don't you need 'breathe' space for the roof? What do they do around window reveals? I also have bay windows. Would they need to be moved? A recessed bay would look weird. Sorry if I sound thick but this is a genuine query.0
