The idea is, you post how it is now - then next month you can post again, and we can all see how everyone's gardens grow through the year :D

    Penny. x

Whoops, sorry, I didn't do that....... I was just keen to use my new Flikr account that came with the new broadband!
I only moved here a few weeks ago and it's a 6 month rental, so I won't be making major changes. So far, I have attacked the brambles as thick as your thumb, ready to hit them with SBK when they re-grow. The neighbour tells me I have a few years worth of untamed bindweed to look forward to as well, so I reckon it will be a major containment job.

However, I'll get the camera out and record some of the fun & games. So far the only pics in there are the ones that prove what a horrible mess we inherited.
It's a great idea to see 'real' gardens develop through the seasons.

Thanks Lotus. When I say the onions and pots in the veg patch didn't do well, they were ok. I don't think I watered enough though. The potatos were fab but could have been larger I admit, again I don't think I watered enough. The ideas of raised beds are brilliant but we aren't going to dig up any more garden as we are happy with what we have, we had about 20 potato plants in that patch which gave us a great harvest and we really don't need any more! Beans did SO well where they were so I don't think we'll move them and I have a brilliant porch at the front of the house which is my mini green house where I start things off. Thanks for the raspberry tips, I have one that I bought in Wilkos which I haven't planted out yet so will take in to account what you said.

Lotus, does this pic help? This is a close up of the veg patch on a June day, taken at midday according to the photo details. Is this not enough sun for potatos/onions? Im sure the sun comes round and eventually it all gets plenty of direct sun every day. If it helps, the garden is quite steep (although the veg patch is totally flat).

I would say that the patch between SH and shed isn't very sunny, you can see in your photo the sun beginning to cast shadows on the fence to the left already, it probably gets 3 hours sun in summer at a guess.
I don't think onions would do well in there. Potatoes would do better in full sun. Measure the amount of sun you get in there this summer and see for yourself.
I can't see the onions in there btw.

Looking at the size of it, I would be putting more like 6 ish potato plants in there, not 20. I would probably use the area for a compost bin and maybe some shade loving veg in front of it.

I'm sure other people would have some ideas as well.

Your garden being on a slope really helps you with the sun.

I was thinking more like 10 raspberry cans, rather then one. Do Wilkos really sell them in ones? What a rip.

Thanks, don't worry we already have lots of raspberries coming from an allotment that someone in my family got hold of, so I have quite a few to come. I will reduce the amount of spuds this year then. Onions had mostly been lifted at this point which is why you can't see them, the birds got them we think. Thanks for the tips. It is all trial an error for me being a first timer!

What a lovely thread great to see what people working with and get advice.

Here's my north facing garden as of 15/02/2009:

I have just planted a couple of gooseberry bushes up the back under the birch tree and in the black troughs are garlic, shallots, red & white onions. The dug over area in the foreground looks ideal as a veg patch however it is always in shade so I'm just going to grass it to get back some grass area we lost to the decking for the little one to play on - unless I can be convinced otherwise!

I have 6 raspberry canes to find homes for Just reading what Lotus-eater has said about SuzieMum's garden I'm thinking I should plant them along the right hand side fence... there is no flower boarder there right now so I'm thinking of just digging up the patchy grass putting the raspberries in and then laying the grass back down.. would this be suitable? or do I really need to dig a proper bed?

This is the area... before the patchy grass grew:

That picture was apparently taken on the 01/04/2008 at 15:46 so not much sunlight however on the left side of the garden as you can see in the previous picture are some leylandi type trees that have been cut back so will hopefully allow more late afternoon light.

Will be doing a few more pots of stuff as well... so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Trying to make a better life.... If you need me you'll find me at the allotment.
  • Hello,
Here's a link to my garden photos.
We moved here in October so have no idea what is in the garden yet. Every day we find new things to excite us!

I cant wait to comapre these photos against some in about 4 months time. There is a bit of a fruit garden already that i will be adding to, but i cant find a natural place to add a veggie plot..... its pots for now until i have an idea of whats already planted!
