One of the things I became slightly addicted to on Saturday afternoons when I lived for a short while in Yorkshire was freshly made pork pie, or hot pork pie, and mushy peas.
Baked black pudding's good too, though we either have that grilled on rolls, or cooked in a tomato sauce with paprika. (can you tell it's nearly tea time????? )

Textiles, languages, travel and a lovely home are not stupid things to want. You have immediate family's support.Appreciate what I've achieved so far. Other people's opinion of me is none of my business.0 -
How about plate pies? They could stretch a smaller amount of meat, so you don't really notice you are getting less mince, say, than you would if just having mince, mash and veggiesLove and compassion to all x0

I am a big fan of plate pies - easy and cheap to make - the possibilities for the fillings are endless - they freeze well and really tasty
:rotfl:Don't forget bubble'n'squeak - lovely on its own or as a side veg - or break an egg or 2 into it to convert it into a cheap and filling meal.
Don't forget the wartime version of battered fish. I remember my Mum making these nearly 50 years ago. Scrub large potatoes and cut into slices, cut a fish fillet into strips and place a slice of fish between two slices of potato, dip in well seasoned batter and deep fry until golden - Yum !
Sainsbury's frozensausage meat is on sale at the moment at 50p a roll - defrost and mix with chopped onion, chopped apple and a packet of OB sage and onion stuffing - makes a great filling for pastry pies - or top with mash for an alternative shepherds pie - or make up packet of breadmix and wrap it round the sausagemeat to make a savoury brioche, can be served sliced hot or cold for packups or picnics - or use as a filling for rolled cabbage leaves, line a baking dish (or your trusty slow cooker) with the rolls, cover with stock and bake until the leaves are tender.
One packet of breadmix will make enough dough to make two very large pizza bases - spread with tomato puree, chopped onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, bits of ham/bacon/beef/chicken etc (whatever you have in the fridge really) and a sprinkling of cheese.Add baked potatoes and homemade coleslawto make a satisfying meal.
I always add rice, pearl barley, oats and plenty of finely diced to minced beef - it triples the quantity and tastes great
Its getting more and more expensive every week to just get the basics in so its doubly important to s-t-r-e-t-c-h food as faras possible ....and healthier too:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

Lots of them can be frozen so make several and freeze. Ready meals frm the freezer! But you know this don't you, Mardatha?0 -
I sometimes do a savoury mashed potato supper dish. Just fry onions, bacon, pepper, mushrooms, chopped celery etc. until soft and mix in with some mashed potato and a handful of grated cheddar.0
