Ok done that - can't identify motherboard, found other stuff most doesn't have manufactures names - graghics card does - downloaded most recent drivers this morning, network card does - but safe mode with networking is fine so I doubt it is that. Leaves creative sound card and a samsung optical drive.0

Ok new day new plan. This is what I'm thinking of. Start up in safe mode with networking. Create a new hardware profile called minimum, by disabling services in system management and disabling hardware in device manager. Close down and re-boot into normal windows choosing the new profile. Run process explorer keep an eye on interrupt requests. If it all works as it should, slowly enable things one by one until interrupts start going up. Any comments welcome. Is there a list anywhere of the absolute minimum services and hardware that must remain enabled for the computer to still work?0

Use hijack to FIX these ~

Run the ONE CLICK scan:idea:0 -
Done all that - On a normal boot hardware interrupts started jumping to 60% CPU usage, mouse started becoming jerky so have restarted in safe mode. Going to go with the hardware profile idea. Any idea of a minimum working configuration of devices and services?0

Id be doing a full reinstall of XP at this stage (IF you do this ~ run a FULL format, NOT a 'quick' one):idea:0

The problem with interrupts is they're like looking for a needle in a haystack when you don't know what a needle looks like. From within a normal boot up of Windows, go into Device Manager and start disabling non system critical peripherals like Soundcards, Network Cards, USB devices, CD Rom Drives one at a time and then reenabling and seeing if the interrupts dissapear.0 -
So far so good - operating on a normal windows boot up but using a 'minimum' hardware profile. Have installed and registered Avast and have logged onto this forum using the ill computer. Now if I enable devices or services one at a time and watch for the interrupts to rise I should have found the problem perhaps?0

Go for it
But I still say it would be much easier with a fresh install:idea:0 -

Yes, then you need to ascertain whether it is a driver or hardware error. You can do that by finding various versions of the driver and trying them. If over three driver revisions you get the same results, it's highly likely it's a hardware error. If not, gratz, you've solved the problem!0 -
Looks as though it was the modem. Since it is never used I've just disabled it in all profiles.0
