I have an old computer that has been up graded from Windows Millennium to Windows XP home. Recently it has started to freeze in use. I have run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - no issues, Ad-Aware - 3 trojans used CCleaner - removed a lot of stuff and spyware doctor - quick scan - no issues. Computer froze try to run full scan. At the moment on start up it freezes at the black windows splash screen (3 blue squares running horizontally in a box). I can get into safe mode with networking and am currently copying all data files onto a network drive. When finished I'm going to try to repair the installation using the windows XP home upgrade disc (having changed the boot sequence in BIOS to boot from CD before hard drive). If this fails I will have to reinstall XP. Can I do this using an upgrade disc? (The Windows ME disc I have is a recovery CD). Advice very welcome. Thank you

Thank you for the very fast response! I will try that as soon as I have got all the files off the computer. I think everything is now backed up, but while I've got safe mode and networking I'm making sure.0

Memory is 1Gb I upgraded when I installed XP.0

Might also be a failing cooling fan on the CPU or dust in the fins of the heat sink, by the age of the OS you have.
Could be a corrupted hard drive / failing sectors. Also reseat the RAM modules Ahh. are you using matched RAM modules ?0 -
I have had the side off the computer - no more dust than expected but removed it anyway. All fans - case psu and cpu work - ran with case open for a while. Memory bought as pair of 512MB didn't use old memory when I upgraded. Everything seems well seated wouldn't expect safe mode to work if it wasn't. Faulty hard drive is my concern. The original was replaced some years ago after a sudden fail.0

Id try a complete clean re install of xp on a formatted disk.
If ive read the OP properly you had ME on the PC & then used the upgrade wizard to install XP over the top...
If this is the case, then a clean install is the way to go. I've never had a successful upgrade, not once in dozens of tries... Blame Bill Gates, format the disk (once your 100% you've got all your data off) & just set it up as a new install.
If you need a guide

Good luck!0 -
The worry I have about trying a clean install is that my XP disc is an upgrade disc and requires a quallifying OS to be present. My ME disc is an OEM recovery disc and I'm not sure that it would work. Nasty place to be if it doesn't!!!!0

Ah yes, good point.
Altho theoretically you should be able to use the key with an OEM version....
However that may require googling to confirm! lol
