The actual Ryanair charge for a name change is 100 euros. This is preposterously high, and its usually cheaper to book a new ticket instead. If they are willing to change the name for 10 euos I don't think that's too bad providing it was not their system that was at fault. Almost all airlines charge for a name change so it's vital to check that the names (and dates/times) are absolutely correct before paying.

My partner was booking flights to Ryanair - because he was flying from Stansted but coming back to Luton they had to be booked as separate flights. He was booking one on his PC and I was looking at the other one on my PC.
Since I had all teh details on mine I carried on booking the flight for him in his name.
When it came to pay, because it was a flight from Italy to the UK the amount was showing in EUROS and the payment option did not include a Maestro card. So I thought I'll stick it on my Visa. I did so and when I entered my credit card details and confirmed the flights I got the booking reference back and the passenger name had been changed from his name to MINE!!!???

I rang them up (at £1 per minute!) and they said that I must have clicked the autofill in the address details and so it change dthe name (without warnign me as it was on a separate page or at the top of the page) and therefore charged me an extra 10 euros to change the name back.

CAN THEY DO THIS? It seems very wrong, it is different from changing the name on a ticket as it was obviously a mistake!!!!???

    many thanks!

    Claudia

You're lucky. Some airlines don't allow a name change full stop.

As far as I remember I did not but as there is a possibility I'll let it go.

I must admit reading the other threads about this has made me quite worried - I've obviously been lucky so far (or have a very bad memory...) and it must only be a matter of time before I get caught out. If/when I do I will be sure to complain. Whether or not you choose to make a fuss, I really think someone important should take this up with the airline as it's obviously becoming an issue.

I recently queried Ryanair and what I thought was a case of DCC with Nationwide. They replied that Ryanair can basically do what they want when you are booking stuff on the Internet and it wasn't strictly illegal. I can't remember the exact reason but can probably look it up.

I did get reimbursed for my issue but that wasn't on the Internet so not really relevant to this thread.

No it's not illegal but it is against Visa's own rules to apply DCC without asking permission first (regardless of whether it's on the internet) - see the bottom of http://www.visaeurope.com/personal/travellingabroad/xe_faqs.jsp. I would be very interested to hear what excuse they did give you though.

Correct, illegal was the wrong choice of words.
I'll try and look up what they said if I get time later on. It was in messages sent back and forward with Nationwide through their web site and I'm not sure if the messages are deleted after a period of time but I'll check.

This is part of a message sent to be by Nationwide when I made the query.

"...there is a disclaimer of sorts on the web-site that is visible to the user and whilst it doesn't state DCC it is a declaration of sorts stating they can process the transaction in their chosen currency and this is synonymous with any airline and is allowed under the Visa regulations that we have to follow."

Which I take to mean they can do pretty much what they like.

Ryanair have another sale on flights for £10 one way and no taxes. Just got a flight to Krakow again £20 return, book until midnight tonight.:j
  • Thanks for all your replies, nice to see different opinions.

I fully agree that 10 euros isn't an extortionaite amount, although it wasn't the amount itself that made me mad but the fact that there is no warning whatsoever that using the autofill will change the passanger name if you have used Ryanair before. Also the first time I filled it in manually and the page went to an error page so I was sent back to refill just the card details and that's when I used the autofill.

Another very dodgy thing is that they get you to use a telephone line that costs £1 per minute and you get to speak to someone who is French and has a thick accent so you end up asking to repeat everything 3 or 4 times before you can understand, and it all amounts to more minutes spent on the phone and more money for them. This is the UK telephone line, so I expect to speak to someone who speaks fluent understandable English for the money I am paying!!!!
Not only, the person already knew the reason why I was calling, meaning that they get this all the time. And to top it all up I never even said what the original passanger name was, he already knew it. That means that it was still stored on their system somewhere?! This was a genuine mistake, not a change of passenger, I didn't book it in my name then a couple of seconds after decided I didn't want to go anymore and gave my ticket to someone else. Very dodgy, but I am not sure whom I should take my complaint to, just so it doesn't happen to anyone else!

Any more thoughts or opinions welcome!
