Absolutely, Toniq, but it's the way it's said and pointed out to people that sometimes comes across as really curt and a bit off-putting. I mean, sometimes you get nothing more than 'already posted' when someone has gone to a deal of effort to try and do something nice for all of us.

In all fairness, most comps I come across are already on here so there's no point in me trying to post things, but I feel sorry for those who have tried and people are quite off with them. I realise the reasons for duplicates needing to be pointed out, but it's sooooo much nicer to at least include a 'thanks' in there when someone tries to contribute and they don't always get that.
I get ur point, but u will never get everyone to uniformally adopt polite phrasing, this forum is too large and has a high turnover of users so it will be virtually impossible to get everyone to be tactful xx
Most people r polite in asking, others i've no clue about, maybe they r rushed, maybe they r busy comping and noticed it and thought they were doing the right thing by pointing it out, generally i've only noticed snappy responses to "serial dupers" xx
there are people friendly signs on VG's guide to help in relaying msgs but again people don't have the time or choose not to use them xx It seems to me a unsolvable issue as u cant comment on every post to pull up the person who mentioned the dupe to use polite wording etc, and the bg's have too much already to do xxx

I do say thanks to nearly every comp posted even if i don't enter,I thank quite often as its politeness,If i win I post to thank.I do search but can't always find the post,Also I enter from many comps from my emails etc so not always from here,But I still find the comp & say a thank-you for my own comping makes it easier to know I have entered.
At the moment I do owe a post to I have won won won thread about my daughters win,and to thank someone for she is absoutely stunned,So am I all will be explained soon, because of the value will make sure all is well first!

What would you like people to say:confused:

Thank you very much for your time and effort, it is very much appreciated, unfortunately I have to inform you, that due to a failure in your searching, you have not identified that it has already been posted.

    Would that do?

Yup:p It had the important words we all agree on 'thank you'.

I even got a PM from a comper recently who did not want to post on here - it was lovely to know that they had won from a comp that I had posted.

I have to say that I have come across way too many that have told everyone about the prize and not bothered, simply, to do a search in order to thank the person who posted.. If I can recognise the prize as being from a comp I posted it can't be that difficult to search for the OP.

It is courtesy to say thanks. To not search at all is simply rude; I think that there may be a few cases where someone gets caught up in the moment, but even the majority of those must be able to come back and edit a post. icon8.gif

A few people I notice are quite rude and impatient with people who are relatively new or have accidently duped a post, but they always get away with it.

I always thanks every thread I read - so I know if Ive entered the comp or not and I always make a special effort to thank in IWIW. I also think some people prefer to thank by pm etc.. so what might be happening and what we assume to be the case are two different things.

I hate it when people are villified for not saying thanks or posting a dupe etc... when people don't know whats going on. There is a certain amount of clique-ness on this forum - I think some peeps fancy themselves as thread police.

Hmmm when I see a dupe I always try to be polite. Eg; saying something like sorry it's here and when they are new saying thanks and welcome BUT i've been in a rush a few times and not done. I haven't been downright rude though (apart from to a persistant spammer).

However, after reading this I might try and be even MORE polite because as someone said previously there's no tone of voice etc and people reading (especially new people), might not know how the forum works and take it the wrong way.:o

PS: I always say thank you to the OP if i've won and I always click the thanks if someone is helpful. It doesn't take much and I like it when i'm thanked. I get fed up if someone has asked for help, i've gone out of their way to help them and then they don't even thank me!

  • Its always nice to be thanked, there was one on here the other day that had won a big prize and posted the link but hadn't said thanks to the poster!!!Naughty, naughty, naughty. I don't understand how people who can take the time to enter a comp can't press a button to thank the poster.

Its all down to everyone's time and posts that we get to enter these comps. Come on people, at least click the button if you dont want to go through all the comps to thank the OP properly.

    Rant over.......

I notice that it's nearly always the same people spotting and sorting the dupes. What you need to realise is that you're merrily entering comps, you spot a dupe - *you* know not to enter again and disqualify yourself, and could keep this knowledge to yourself and catch up on the board a bit, but instead you do the search that the op could have done, post a link to the duplicate thread, open another page to send a pm to a bg, post to say you've sent the merge request, and then get shouted at for not posting a long gushing paragraph about how nice of them it was to post the dupe. Mostly for new posters, they're pointed in the direction of the comping guide, but the majority of duplicates on the board are posted by the same psople time and time agine, and who still blame the search when it works for everyone else.
