My poor laptop

Hello everyone,
my machine seems to have the same problem as VanyaHargreeves.
I rarely use Firefox, however today while I was using it, suddenly my machine jumped to automatic updates (which it never does while I am using the computer), installed a 3-step media player update, reboot, and now my machine does the same thing.
I found this thread by searching folder and I found this on my music file,
TEMP.owner-PC.000 (I added virus and searched- finding this thread).
I used system restore to no avail. Whenever I reboot, Vista indicates it is preparing my Desktop settings- then everything starts over again.
Previously it never loaded my "desktop settings" and never showed a status box in the upper left corner as it does- now this happens.
In the last reboot it indicated that my preferences were not completely refreshed and that I had a temporary log-in.
I notice a lot of .dll files I didn't previously and also system32 appears twice (I think) in a status box before the desktop loads and everything has disappeared from the previous session.
Any ideas?- I'm sure this has to have occurred previously. Is the only way to create a new log-in (with administrative capabilities)? Also, does Microsoft have a call-in (I'm sure this has occurred before).
Thanks for your patience in reading my question(s)!
Thanks,

here - suggest, if your issue is similar to this one, try working through the suggestions in this thread, then once done, start a new thread (to save getting the two mixed up) and we'll take it from there......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
