Someone on shop till you drop mentioned a site for cheap food called

    www.approvedfood.co.uk

They sell food that is quite near its best before date but is still all right for use.

I could not see any Marmite, just Bovril but items change constantly and it is worth a look.

Just had a look on that site and I found some Marmite,it is 400g squeezy bottle,RRP £4.96,their price £2.00.I've never bought the squeezy bottle, but I suppose it is the same stuff as the jar.

Let`s look on the bright side. Only one more christmas after this and the tough times will start to fade. Honest

Errrr.....<cough>....well I'm hoping so.....but I'm not sure why we are being told this by the powers-that-be??? Does anyone know? errr.....as I don't actually think so. I personally think we are now in transition to Post Peak oil society and are in for a "challenging" few years whilst we transition over to a somewhat different way of life (hopefully better). Leastways - the positive thing recently is I think Barack Obama "gets it" and looks, to date, like he'll be going for it to get America en route to living through this period in the best way possible - which, hopefully, will "rub off" on other Western countries. So far - he looks like he will be one determined, intelligent man....fingers crossed the big corporations don't get to him and get him "treading their line" on the one hand or anyone assassinates him to prevent him doing the job I think he was born to do. I honestly think it's part of his Life Plan to be President of America and "turn things round" - the question now is whether he will be faithful to that Life Plan and do what he contracted to do - or whether he will be sitting there doing his Life Review at the end of his life and being told that he "failed". So - am wishing him all the best that he remembers what he came for - and doesn't follow recent U.S. history of "let's start yet another damn war - and involve Britain" - or I would change my mind VERY rapidly....

The readymade square foot gardening "raised beds" I have bought have their own igloo type greenhouse covers - I'd like to see a cat manage to get into one of them:D

I have been thinking about starting a squarefoot garden. Only trouble is that my DH is so busy he hasn't got time to make me one and I am hopeles at that sort of thing so I would be very pleased to know where you got your ready made ones from.

    thanks

I used to order organic veggie box from Abel and Cole and then Riverford. I was never really happy with any of them, and didn't continue. The same issues that you have.
But, to give them credit, it is really hard to make choices for other people. I used to love when, in season, I used to get lots of plums, as I love them, but some other people would not have been happy with that. The quality was good, though.
Riverford was actually better than Abel and Cole, that one used to arrive so unripe (say bananas, avocados) that I had to wait for up to two weeks until I could use them. No good.
However, I find Riverford Organic meat box excellent and still continue getting it until/if I find something better locally.

Further on the links people found useful earlier. To sum up. The sources of supply I know of for readymade "raised beds" are:

    www.v-gloo.co.uk

    www.linkabord.co.uk

    www.unwins.co.uk
(where there is a link to several raised beds they make)

Google "square foot gardening" for a lot of info on growing food in very limited space.

Borrow the book "Fresh food from small spaces: the square inch gardener's guide to year-round growing, fermenting and sprouting" by R.J. Ruppenthal

I'm going shopping this afternoon, would it be an idea to stock up on sugar? I can easily get through a bag of caster sugar a week when I'm baking. Is it set to go up in price?

Found a recipe yesterday for cornflakey biscuits, from what I remember from the recipe you mash the cornflakes up abit, mix in a tin of condensed milk add cranberries. Make little biscuit shapes and cook them in the oven (not a clue how long for) then once they've cook and cooled you turn them over and smooth some milk chocolate on the base. :happyhear Making them tomorrow and if anyone wants the recipe i'm more than happy to share. (wont be able to post it until tomorrow afternoon while the OH is at work)
