Right....I hope we can now get over the upset on one hand and "sick stomachs" (well - mine certainly was for one) caused over the last few posts on this thread.

I've been unemployed myself - hence the "sick stomach" feeling....now can we get back to a bit of compassion please for those affected by the current crisis? - rather than thinking how we personally can "profit" by it.

    Thank you.

I think one thing is for certain.....as things get tougher we can take nothing for granted.

My dh works for a company who are in the process of deciding whether they are re locating or not (closing factory and moving to a bigger one too far away). He has been threatened with loosing his job so many times over the past 4 years I dont even get that sick feeling anymore_pale_ . We will learn a little more about his future come christmas:confused: .
Nice timing but at least we have our thermals, blankets, radiators foiled and candles :rotfl:....oh and a bag of red lentils lmao:rotfl:
If I didnt laugh I would cry......so big hugs to all facing uncertainty in these tough times x

ceridwen - I'm entitled to look for a bargain as much as anyone else on here and to say so. I do feel for bubblepirate, of course I do, having been made redundant three times and my current job being in the balance too at the moment.
  • OMG - I sincerely hope no-one took my original post as one of "quick there's some gains to be had". The point I was making was the reason for the liquidation as I felt it pertinent to the earlier threads and that is that the company was unable to re-negotiate its bank loan.

This is because the banks are not lending each other money which in turn means they are not lending businesses money, which could eventually translate to the earlier discussion about overdrafts being re-called.

My thoughts are with all those people affected by the potential loss of jobs. But due to the nature of this website, of course it is natural that people are going to also be thinking of bargains. Afterall, them not partaking in saving themselves some cash is not going to make any difference anyway.

    Hi all

Well, Im soooo glad that hubby got offered another 5 years on top of his 22 years in the army.. It has been a god send.. it gives us 5 years to clear off everything apart from the mortgage :T ..Which we are looking to pay off with hubbies lump sum pension at the end(in 4 years now).... and if not we are stashing the lump sum and using the monthly pension to pay the monthly mortgage ;)
Hubby had just taken courses to be a 360/180 excavator driver (paid for by the forces) before they asked him to extend.... I think a job in the building industry would not have been very secure in the present climate  ...

We heard yesterday that my SIL + BIL who both work for the same company have just been made redundant  ..they recently took on a bigger mortgage-well they were buying 50% and went for the rest! (even though there were rumbles of redundancy  -we tried to talk them out of it :wall: ..but failed.. so now they have no jobs (although some redundancy pay)..and a 2 year old and a 6 month old  ..we are keeping our fingers crossed for them and offering what help we can-but there is little we can do

We have cut back on our spending quite a bit... I decided that this 5 years was the ideal time to do a "dummy run" of living on less -so If we ever have to it won't be such a shocker ;) . The strange thing is we are actually very comfy living as we are now... having a bit of cash saved is so much more pleasing than buying things willy nilly.... and like others on here im finding stepping of the "spending, buying, must have treadmill" very liberating :D

I just hope everyone else on here comes through these times ok ... im sure that with the support and advice on here it should be a little less stressfull ;)

Well...one certainly develops a "line" in black humour in these circumstances I know....I've lost count myself of just how long I've been having to live with job insecurity over my head myself..."its going, no its not, its going, no its not". After a while it almost becomes "part of the furniture"...its just wondering how to tell when the Axe is really going to fall after all the uncertainty that feels problematic. So - one just gets on and makes plans upon financial plans upon financial plans - and "barricades" oneself in financially as much as possible and does umpteen "count ones blessings" per day every day "At least I've got this, at least I've dealt with that....." ad infinitum.

Right now....I have worked out pretty much to the day when I think "News" will happen (even what time - cynical - moi?), what that "News" will be....and what will happen thereafter...........;) --but I may be wrong...time will tell...

Its a matter of balance isnt it. Of getting bargains wherever possible but without feeling like vultures moving in for the kill. And we're all in this together, -- the only ones who aren't are the fat cat bosses at the top of the pile, and the govt. The same govt who have decided people can have 2% wage rises and not a penny more --but who are chauffered around in limos and have 2 homes , both subsidised by us. Right down to the last energy saving bulb that they claim for on theire expense accounts.

    True mardatha.....

I follow the logic of "might as well recognise opportunities" - BUT......thought needs to be given before leaping straight in and using "yay for me" type language that might (DEFINITELY HAS!!!!) proven hurtful to the people involved.

I guess the words coming to mind here are:
    - compassion
    - empathy
    - TACT!

There but for the grace of God......etc.

Lets face it - if anyone makes any "silver lining for themselves" type comment if my own job goes down the Swanee.....well....I'm still working on controlling my temper personally - but that would be an occasion where I wouldnt try to do so.
