Hi, very long time lurker coming out of the woodwork here! I love this thread and wanted to add about the turkey legs. I got one (I knew of them because we used to feed them to our husky but now they're fit my kids LOL) and it didnt fit in my slow cooker. I put it in a couple of inches of water in a roasting tin with another upside down tin on top and did it in the oven for a couple of hours. It was lovely and succulent and so much meat came off that i made 2 huge pies - in big lasagne type dishes. One with a white sauce with leeks, butter beans etc and the other with frozen mixed veg and gravy, and i added stuffing balls made from an organic mix that was reduced to 10p in Sainsburys!
Even allowing for me not being good with pastry they went down very well with my family - esp the stuffing ball/gravy one, and each did about 6 good portions. Also the cooking water was just as tasty as proper stock so was put in slow cooker and made delicious "chicken" noodle soup next day.

Not trying to teach granny to suck eggs here LOL ( i am in TOTAL awe of most of the posters here!) but for those undomestic godesses like me i thought this might help if perhaps anyone has a SC like mine that the legs dont fit in. Right now ill run back off and be A-nonny-mouse again!

Thanks - my SC is 3.5l so if it doesn't fit I'll know what to do ;)

Don't hide away... did you put stuffing balls in the pie???? Liking that idea... did you cook them first or just straight in the pie?

I have to use a packet meant for 8+ each time I cook for the four of us as OH loves sage stuffing.

I love roast chicken and stuffing ball sarnies ;)

I add a crushed Vitamin C tablet when I make wholemeal bread.

No need to lurk! In fact join in on the daily old style! I have the oval shaped slow cooker and a turkey leg fits perfectly in that so I did not think about people with the round ones!

  • Elona: Vitamin C? Never knew that.Thank you, will give that a go.
What does the vitamin C do? Sorry if the answer is obvious
    but am new to breadmaking.

I only use vitc for wholemeal but it just helps it rise and get lighter but not sure why!

I thought today what a different place the world is when the sun shines....
I am disgusted at mr. bean -oops sorry--alastair darling and his big help to poorer families. If you're skint and freezing in a damp house, is it going to make you feel any better to know you're getting roof insulation ? Underwhelemd to hell here.
re the turkey leg that wouldn't fit in the slow cooker-- personally I used a hatchet. And enjoyed it SO much !

Mardatha.... Mr Bean :rotfl: LOL!!! But quite so....I'm living in the bottom two floors of a massive Victorian house, so a fat lot of good roof insulation would do me! I also don't HAVE a boiler! And I'd chase anyone who tried to replace my windows with DG round the block with that hatchet!

Just remember that we can't conspire online to chop off Alistair Darling's turkey legs in protest or we'll all end up in court....:p

    Regards

Honestly, I didn't think confining it to those in receipt of child benefit was fair.

The step kids are with us nearly every evening, all weekend and stay a total of 3 nights every week. We have to feed them, keep them warm etc and yet don't get CB or child tax credits because they aren't with us for the majority of nights (they only count the nights). Should they be warm for half the week and cold for the other half the week just because they won't portion out CB payments?

Must be many more in our situation. It doesn't take into account shared care.

Have you considered writing to your MP? You can email him or her via http://www.writetothem.com/

I don't see this offer of Alistair Darling's as a grand gesture. The scheme to get a grant for insulation/boiler/advice has been running for years, it's known as the Warm Front scheme. I had my boiler replaced two years ago - but will I be able to afford the gas?

Exactly. A lot of homes already have insulation, double glazing etc and have cut down on energy consumption.
Also, how does this help people who are renting?

In my situation, hubby earns the *average* wage (which I realise is a lot more than a lot of people) and I've worked out that we will also be in *fuel poverty*.

What people need, is help with actually paying their fuel bills and caps on the energy companies like they have in the EU.

are you using any white flour in your bread mix??

I found substituting 1/3 wholemeal for white helped loads
