Thats a good idea, I rarely use my oven so that would be much more cost effective.

That was part of my reasoning... the rest of it being it's cheaper to buy a whole chicken than chicken breasts, and I love roast chicken but can't be bothered to sit around twice over waiting for them to finish roasting ;)

Thanks PenPin for getting me to think about this early. It's going to be a strange week next week - I'm having my 50th birthday, which means the village over for drinks (and possibly food), a friend flying in and staying a few days and a party for the family.... Anyway just been working it all out, although I may revise it later. Great to have at least a plan on paper.

Sat - HM wedges, grilled entrecote or escalope, parmesan parsnips and salad.
Sun - French friends for lunch: HM salmon mousse, tajine and saffron rice, raspberry meringue chill.
Mon - kale mash with smoked sausage
    Tues - fake nasi goreng
Wed - birthday and expecting unknown number of guests for drinks. Buffet finger food, also beef in ale (slow cooker) for those who linger on and stay for dinner
Thur - friend arrives from UK. Either coq au vin or blanquette de veau
Friday - winter barbecue in kitchen fireplace
Sat - Birthday party for extended family in hotel in Belgium, overnight stay
Sun - depends on what time we get home. Probably something like Turkish lentil soup & bread or a dig in the freezer (no idea how many will come back to stay a few days after the bash).

Hmm - I'll probably be exhausted after all that! :-)

thanks newlywed im definately going to ty that next week sounds lush
  • This might sound like a daft question, but I'm new to this so happy to sound daft! :p

How do you come up with your meal plans?

At the moment I cook on Sunday (meal depends on what I fancy, but I cook LOADS) and keep eating that until it runs out and then start again. It's not a bad way of doing it, but the same thing for three or four days can get boring, and I never know what to cook until I'm in the shop the day I'm cooking. And then I end up buying loads of bits I don't use.

There has to be a better way!! :D

  • Hi hannah

Not daft at all, it's taken us a while to get into mealplanning, there's a mealplanning guide somewhere I'll try to find the link later (found it). Penelope Penguin's Complete Menu Plans Collection will help too.

dp and me list out what's in the freezer and cupboard, then plan 3-4 weeks ahead aiming for one fish, chicken, beef, vegetarian and roast each week.

    This week we've planned:

Monday - Kitchen Revolution beef stew and mash (freezer)
Tuesday - macaroni cheese, broccoli and ciabatta (requested by dd)
Wednesday - Kitchen Revolution red cabbage and pork bake (freezer)
    Thursday - Nigella's chilli (freezer)
Friday - steak, veg (freezer) and jacket potatoes
Saturday - out on a playdate with dd's friend
Sunday - Costco fish and chips (freezer)

Steak on Friday this week although we usually have roast on Fridays.

    Hope that helps.
