Unfortunately not. If a cut in hours is necessary due to financial reasons, then they are well within their rights to do so. They tried doing this when I was pregnant using a loophole - they could make me redundant then re-advertise my post with reduced hours & a different name. Nobody is untouchable when it comes to employment, even when pregnant.
I managed to go on maternity leave at 29wks before they could do this.
They can however, afford to expand the business. As long as they can show all they're doing is to benefit the business, then they can do it.
Its an 'every man for himself' World, so I'm doing the best I can for our family. OH actually got turned down for bar work because he 'wasn't young enough'. (seriously, thats what they said!!) & not even the local fast food places or supermarkets are recruiting at the moment.

It's not splitting hairs. Our tax money from previous years was used for people who needed it then and we hope they had to justify their need for it in the same way as we have to justify it when we claim benefits now.0
