Whilst i have been sorting out food, I have been coming giggling, going back into the kitchen and repeat. You lot are well funny. And the image it put into my head with the stripy undies and over the knee socks. Well it did make me laugh

Update for today - paid for lovely shetland work and lodger - resisting the urge to send it all to scary loan - and must budget for car tax and pay some of CC that BRB was put on.

Local industrial place is selling chainsaws for £80 thinking quite serioulsy of getting one - we have a couple bow saws here but would really like to buy one of my own - giant carving knife - I have all the safety kit as we got trained at work to use one. Pixie and electric carving knife :rotfl:

Thats about it for updates today. Meal planning is making me very grumpy. But I am about to do the next few weeks to get us through this month and plan a big shop for mainland in early april where I plan to be in Edinburgh for a course (work pay for car:D ) so I can load up at asda, chinese supermarket etc - any tips and ideas for bulk stuff welcomed - do have a makro card but never found it very good value - any tips intrepid shoppers?? Thinking about bulk stuff like loo roll, flour, tins, squash etc. Ideas welcomed:rolleyes:

:confused: Anyone heard about transition movement - not read much but its basically a move to reduce/dismiss our dependancy on oil and essentially move retrospecitvely to a system which is more localised and less dependant on outside influences (goods and services) to sustain itself.

(Well that's my niave first take on it - currently reading a book about it)

I only ask this because where I live barter is still pretty common place.

Things we only pay for still are petrol, fuel for heating/lighting and other services we cannot negotiate a 'swap' for.

This week I have bartered/swapped/freecycled:

straw for the chickens for a box of hobnobs
lodgings for diy maintenance
wood for labour
childcare for a bit garden maintenance
kettle for a sticky toffee pudding
freecycle desk to us
freecycle bike to a pals daughter
dog bed for a takeaway on saturday (hurrah)

Do you guys barter much? Just wondering if its more common in rural area's than towns??

If you're heading to Edinburgh give me a shout. I'm pretty near there. My advice (if it was me)? I'd head to the biggest Poundland and stock up.

Bartering? I think it is more common in rural areas and maybe my grandparents generation but between my friends and I we do it. I got a lovely suit from my friend (I need to alter it) in return I'm driving her for a night out (I'm not going on night out, but offered to be taxi in return for the suit). We did a lot of it growing up, I'd babysit for the farmer and his wife and in return we got a pheasant!

Not heard it called that ... its more likely to be called alternative lifestyle down here (south coast of England, about as far away from you as its possible to be!). Its more likely to be alternative lifestyle down here! I think the old ways of barter were more or less destroyed, but its slowly making a comeback through things like freecycle and gumtree.

whereabouts in Ed is a decent one - will be based up at the Uni (down by ikea) and at the botanic gardens by inverleith?

I am hysterical on the mainland in big supermarkets I wander around starstruck saying 'wow' alot - OH thinks its hysterical. (and embarrassing!!):D

I am the same when I am first down looking out the car window at trees - wow wow wow - amazing what you miss!

Fay, this is Poundland http://www.poundland.co.uk/pages/default.aspx lots more deals in store. Ikea is about 30 mins from me.

Gumtree is the online equivalent of your local ads (or cards in newsagents window), stuff either for sale/trade etc
