I went on one of those calculator sites once. I smoked for 20 years, on average between 10 and 15 a day.

I plugged in the details and it calculated that I had spent £30,000 on fags. I nearly dropped through the floor. That's half my mortgage, ok I realise I wouldn't have saved it in the bank - but there would have been some nice clothes and holidays in there somewhere.

    EM xx

That is just the money what about the effect on your body and health!
:j Proud mum to Jade age 10 years and Baby Ellie born Christmas Day:eek: with a broke heart :( Proven to be a little fighter and battling on with her heart condition :j
  • I smoke amber leaf and spend £5 ish on 1oz a week. Ive smoked for 18 years and Im only 33, I hate smoking, these days Im embarassed doing it, but I just cant give up. I lasted only 9 hours when I tried in jan, that was with gum!!
Apparently Im no candidate for Zyban as I have ocd, and Zyban is a mind altering drug so if you've any mental health 'history' they wont prescribe it. I havent personally asked yet, but thats what my mum reported when she asked for it, and she only had a bit of counselling 20 years ago. (She smokes 20 a day, a whopping £39 a week or £2000 a year  which is £20,000   in the last 10 years alone....she gave up for 2 weeks in jan, but said it got harder not easier)

Infact, for me its not even a money issue, just a health issue, and Id like to set a better example to my kids. I had asthma until I was 24 when it suddenly just went away, but I know it must have severely messed up my lungs, and that was back in the days when I smoked Marlboro. I had regular asthma attacks and caught a bad virus which lasted 6 months and weakened one lung, which has become like an indicator of when Ive smoked over my limit - I get a bubbly pain in my left lung.
After reading the thread, I will try hypnosis I think, because its worth a shot.
And good luck to the people giving up.

Yes, I'm amazed nobody's mentioned the "real cost" of smoking :D
