  • Hi there

Speaking as an EX smoker can I just say one of the things that kept me on the straight and narrow for the past 2 and a half years is the fact that EVERY TIME I smoked i threw 25 pence down the drain. Imagine that!

  • Why dont you smoke roll ups instead? I buy tobacco when I travel abroad at about £4.00 for a 50g pouch which will last about a week. Even if you buy tobacco in this country at £11.00 a pouch it is much cheaper than buying talor made ciggies. I brought a rolling machine from Argos (£9.99) and usually roll 18 in one go (takes about 15 minutes) then put them in a ciggarette case. It would save you a fortune if you swapped over.

My hubbie gave up last July using Nicorettes but what motivated him the most was putting the cost of a pack of cigarettes into a jar every day and seeing how much money he used to waste mount up so quickly.

One of the (many) reasons I never smoked - couldn't afford it :)

I tried very hard to give up smoking and, whilst I admire those who have, I know from my own experience just how difficult it is to break the habit.
I was a '40 a day' smoker for over 30 years and although I did cut down to about 15 a day I just could not give up altogether - I managed the odd week, indeed I went for six weeks without smoking but was really hard to be with.
Certainly cost was one consideration - effects on health the other. I just wish that, back in the 60's and 70's, Governments, and tobacco companies, had given more thought to the health of their 'customers' rather than to the generation of profits and revenue.
I still, I am afraid to say, smoke - albeit that I now smoke 'roll ups' and a 25gram pouch of tobacco lasts me 4-5 days, so whilst significant, the cost factor is lessened. As I am smoking less, I tend to enjoy the taste of the tobacco more.
I have disciplined myself to never smoke in my (or anybody else's) car. I used to smoke automatically whilst driving - to the extent that I would often light up only to find a cigarette still burning in the ashtray.
Equally, I never smoke during a meal, wheras I had adopted the continental habit of eating between cigarettes, and I would never smoke around children.
I can not pretend that I don't smoke in the house, especially in this cold weather, but I don't smoke in the living room or bedrooms and try not to smoke if we have guests.
I know that I should, even could, give up altogether and openly put my hand up to not having the willpower to do so, but I have cut down drastically and, from a financial point of view, ave adopted the lowest cost option.

If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

I also smoke roll ups, I spend 2.66 p/wk on tobacco and about 20 pence on Rizlas and about 88p every two weeks for filters. If I smoked straight ciggerettes I would easily smoke a pack a day but I don't with this costs me about £15 p/month max to smoke... should probably still quit though :o

Good luck at the Doctor's - I have heard good things about Zyban, but I think you will still need willpower as well.
