Chaps is guaranteed same day correct?

Yes .... but will generally cost circa £30. An immediate Faster Payment will do the same job and is free ..... but few Banks are running them up to the maximum £10k level yet.

The generally accepted level for money laundering eyebrows to start to be raised - if you're relatively unknown to the Institution concerned - is €15,000. That was around £10k when first introduced as a guide .... but is closer £13,250 at today's rates. And I'm not sure if the general UK guidance has moved with the exchange rate ... or whether it remains £10k.

wouldnt you have had to pay for the transfer (chaps) since most bacs limits sit at around 5k.

Concur with most of your post ... but not that bit. The NatWest daily BACS limit is £10k ....... which appears to be the favoured limit for most Banks. But Halifax operate £15k / transaction. And you can do multiples.

  • Where is the OP, they not on this thread much? Maybe the police have arrested them for money laundering?

Yes and the other alternative would have been for the OP to do 2 x £9k BACS payments, say one day after the other. So long as not in same 24hr period it is fine. Yea, would take 3 days to hit the account but at least it shows a paper trail, i.e. auditable to a higher degree than paying in that amount of cash LOL

That assumes the staff in the branch have any idea what they are doing...

I went into a branch once wanting to move a large amount of money (larger than that mentioned in this topic) into HSBC - Having read on the website I thought I could do multiple £15k BACS transfers - but the guy on the counter and the lady behind him claimed that Halifax do NOT do BACS transfers and the only way to send money was to do a CHAPS transfer and pay for it. I argued with them for a while but they wouldn't listen.

They then told me to go to the helpdesk if I wanted to do a CHAPS transfer - the lady there said they did do BACS but the limit was £10k and i could only do it once per day. She suggested getting a bank draft which would be free and just taking that to HSBC. She then sent me back to the counter.

At the counter they said that bank draft's are not free no matter what they lady at the helpdesk had said - was getting very frustrated at this point  Eventually they figured out that bank drafts in your own name are free and gave me the draft (though not until some guy pestered me about where the money had come from - even though it showed a transfer from my savings account to my current account both with halifax on the paper he was holding....)

If you are being investigated by any serious authority, they'll be using a forensic accountant. It will take them about 2 seconds to locate the original source of the funds, if it was paid through an account anywhere in the UK - since they'll have gone to the police liaisons for all the banks and said "gimme all you got on Mr Smith."

It's when they can't find out where the cash came from that's the problem. ;)

  • hi, many thanks to all those who have helped me with your advice...

But All those who made stupid remarks about me, you are not going to like this....

"BARCLAYS HAVE CREDITED MY ACCOUNT WITH £19K ON SATURDAY....!!!"

they said, it was internal error and nothing to do with anything else, and have also apologised.

and to put records straight, i never said, i saved £1k from Child Benefit but rather and i quote from my First Post ever on this forum, go back and check for yourselves:
"- on 19th Jan 09, I had nearly £19k of CLEARED funds in my Barclays current account (£10.5k as cash deposits at Barclays, £8.2k as transfer from my Natwest A/C, £200 from Paypal and the rest from Child Benefits)
    " which means approx £100....!!!

I was honest from the beginning thats why i got my money back and because some people here gave me extremely valuable advice and i acted upon that advice so BIG THANKS to all of them .....

    BYE
