thanks for all your replies, guys.

to clarify things, exactly £10.1k was cash deposits, made up of 3 deposits (2.6k+4.5k+3k) and around £8.3k was BACS from my own Natwest account (which is now empty), the rest from Paypal and a little bit of child benefits. therefore the full £19k wasn't cash deposit ...!

If they consider this to be money laundering  , and like you guys said, they are not allowed to tell me this by law (if they think thats the case)...
when exactly will i find out whats going to happen to my money???

will i get my money or will it remain frozen and they won't even give me a reason, if they think its money laundering???

i think i got myself involved in a big trouble by putting this money into my account _pale_

When i spoke to my case-handler in Customer Relations today and tuesday, he did ask if i still wanted the money (on both occassions)??? which was quite strange...why did he ask that as the account is frozen anyway?

Shall i just ask this guy (my contact in customer relations) tomorrow myself that what proofs he would need for me to prove its legit money or what shall i do??? i am confused as hell...

    please help !!!

I know it doesn't help much but i would recommend legal advice. I think a solicitor would provide better assistance in this.

Can you provide evidence where the cash is from?

This is all i had and it was for my credit card debts, personal loan and buying a small car. i deposited the money believing it would be safe in a bank but feel as though i have been robbed....its been 10 days and nobody even tells me whats going on. I have not even received a letter from Barclays !!!

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you pay the creditors by BACS? I can understand that if you bought the car from a private seller he might want cash but a I'm sure a dealer would accept a cheque or debit card or banker's draft.

I wouldn't feel safe carrying £17K in cash around!

It looks really suspicious and Im not suprised they stopped the transaction. You said you paid large amounts of cash into the Natwest, then took all this money out and paid it into the Barclays. You also said you do not work and have no other money!?
    £100 - £10,000

Do what I suggested earlier and offer anything they want in order to assist in the clearing up of this mess. Tell them you understand it looks dodgy but it genuinely isn't and ask what they need to satisfy their AML criteria to release the funds.

Stop worrying, it will be sorted if you ring and offer anything and tell them you KNOW how it looks, but then prove to them that it isn't bad. easily done according to your scenario...

  • miamoo: i did not take the money out of Natwest and deposited into Barclays, but instead there was a BACS transfer (online trf) from Natwest to Barclays for £8k.

sutton111: it was from a sale of property overseas but it was brought over as cash as the payment over there is always in cash. I do not hold any bank accounts over there so could not carry out an online transfer.

A Nice Englishman: the reason i gave to Barclays when i went to withdraw money (£17k cash) was that i was purchasing a car from a private seller who only wanted cash ...

milfordmadness: a million thanks for your huge help in this matter and i am going to do exactly what you have told me to do.

I will update all you guys tomorrow after i have spoken with Mr Paul Spencer again....

    thankyou all...
  • Sadia,

Try reading here to see what the bank "may think" - it'll open your eyes a little and maybe then you'll see the funny side of this (the bank probably think you're a dealer or summat lol).... Look here: http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/productsandservices/practicenotes/aml.page

Best of luck, let us know how you get on.

There is an audit trail then, offer this and explain this to Barclays; and offer natwest bank statements etc.... every little helps
sutton111: it was from a sale of property overseas but it was brought over as cash as the payment over there is always in cash. I do not hold any bank accounts over there so could not carry out an online transfer.
This also has an audit trail, offer the legal paperwork from the sale of property. Also get proof online that backs up your claim property sales are cash deals - this sounds very dubious! Again offer them the information you obtain!
A Nice Englishman: the reason i gave to Barclays when i went to withdraw money (£17k cash) was that i was purchasing a car from a private seller who only wanted cash ...
Again, very plausible reason - explain this to barclays! Most private sellers want cash, I certainly would if I sold my car!
milfordmadness: a million thanks for your huge help in this matter and i am going to do exactly what you have told me to do.
Go for it, be as willing and up front as you can be. To be honest we've had to drag this info out of you - if you'd mentioned all this in post 1 then we'd have answered you immediately lol. Just go back and stop being secretive, and explain everything to the bank and offer paperwork to accompany your explanation.

Your phone call should go something like this:
I sold my property overseas and invested the money in Natwest/other sources. I then decided to buy a car and therefore had to withdraw cah in order to pay for the car as the buyer will only accept cash. I can provide a paper trail for the original bacs payment and withdrawals from my other bank and also get proof of property sale.

This, should, sort it for you!
