Pretty sure the old style licence is fine. Worked several times for me!
  • i'm looking at a my travel fly drive holiday in december, and for the gold insurance upgrade through Dollar they're asking £266.

the website states: "Pre-booking your insurance also allows you to budget well in advance and gives you valuable peace of mind knowing that you won't be met with numerous extra charges when you arrive. In addition it will also save you time in resort."

now i'm not bothered about saving time as its just me and the other half but do you actually get "numerous extra charges" or is it a scare tactic?

Also, does the exchange rate work in our favour if we take it out when we get there or do Dollar check who you booked with and charge the same as my travel?
  • We are looking to get to Orlando as cheaply as possible with a car there are
2 adults and 3 kids any good ideas? Just need the flight and car accommodation already sorted. Thanks for any tips
  • Trying to sort out holiday to Florida for husband, 4 children and myself for June this year. Best flights I can find are with globespan flying from Glasgow. Better deals from London airports but by the time we add on cheap flights to London there is nothing in it. Decided its probably not worth the hassle with 4 children! Found good car hire prices through a link from this thread

Hope this is a help. Keep you posted.

Looks like we have to go to the states in October this year for a friend's wedding in Atlanta, so seeing as there isn't that much to do in Atlanta we were planning on going down to Orlando for a a few days. We've got a good deal on flights to Atlanta and I've been reading this thread for tips on car hire but I have a little thought in the back of my head that what we are planning might not be possible. Its only a 6 hour drive or so but I was wondering if anyone knew if its possible to take a hire car out of state?

Yes Vampgirl most rental companies allow you to take the car out of the state where you hired it. I've always found yescarhire very good on price.
https://www.yescarhire.com/ Or use travelsupermarket or lastminute.com. Check the FAQ's or T's&C's to confirm that you can drive the car out of state. I would say its very rare that you can't.
  • hi
we've booked a fly-drive to sanford with basic car and basic insurance. will there be any problem if we don't collect the car at all.
We have found it cheaper to book a fully insured car elsewhere.
    Any advice would be appreciated
  • I would never take the car hire that is included with a fly drive from the UK.

We have booked fly drive, but then just ignored the car they provide and book our own. On our last trip the car hire was provided by Thompsons as part of the fly drive, but the insurance was not included. I priced insurance, and then priced a car hire with Dollar including insurance, and was able to hire a convertable for one week with insurance for less then Thompsons wanted for insurance. What a rip-off.

We use this car hire company CarHire-Orlando.com for all our car hire in Florida now, all prices include full insurance so there is nothing else to pay. They only do car hire for holders of a UK drivers licence.
