Flydrive package vs flight and seperate car rental

  • Going to Kissimee for the first time in five weeks. Doing a package for a villa and a hire car. Cannot organise the insurance side of things until we land at Sanford as travel firm has stopped arranging this end. Expect to have to fork out at least £350 for the cover for a two week period. Wonder if we would be better off to forget the car and use the money for taxis to and from airport and use local transport to get to International Drive and all the parks? As not expecting to go anywhere sightseeing per se, we reckon that we don't need to pay £350 plus all the car park fees to leave the car sat in the sunshine each and every day. If you have knowledge of the area and what is achievable would love to hear your advice. Thanks.
  • bit off the track with this one but does anyone know if the new play station 3 is available in the states and would it work over here? I am off there with my kids in Aug and it would be great to get one

I really don't think ditching the car will add to your experience in Orlando. Public transport is not readily available and taxis are expensive. £350 seems excessive , to hire a compact car for 2 weeks would cost less than £250 inclusive of insurance with yescarhire. The parking for the parks are however a ripoff!
CHEAP IN COST NOT IN STYLE...

Agree with bobesox. No fun standing about in seriously hot weather(or getting soaked) waiting for unreliable public transport; or depending where your villa is - no public transport.
How do you get provisions from supermarket(which could be several miles away) to villa?

A rule of thumb is that scheduled flights sell the cheapest seats first and they get more expensive the later you book, charter flights usually get cheaper if they are not selling.

Book your car with airline network, you don't have any nasty shocks when you get there, they will probably try and talk you into upgrading to a bigger car, be firm with them, don't believe all they say about it not being big enough etc.

Check that there isn't an airport facility charge, for example if you rent a car from las vegas airport there is a charge of $3 a day which goes on your credit card when you return the car
(I have made a new post about this as I think it is something people should be aware of)
  • Hi
I booked a flydrive on My travel .com about 4 weeks ogo out of Belfast .It cost £569 for the 4 of us for 2 weeks .I also took Airtours platinum insurance package which was £295 which covers everything including multiple drivers and a free tank of petrol. So for £864 all in i think i got a bargain considering the price of the same flydrive on the same flight same date went up to over £1300 + insurance 2 days later .Just 3 weeks until we go can't wait .
  • I am on the look out for Car Hire in Miami, at the moment the best price i can find is £332 for 2 weeks (convertible) via the carhire3000 site, only issue is that the site name sounds a little dodgy !
    stay lucky!

What we did in the end was get the car and flight seperately. Car from yescarhire, and the flight from mytravel. Then the flight was cancelled due to one of the many hurricanes that season. Got a full refund. So we flew Virgin for not a lot more when it had calmed down a bit. It wasn't the end of the hurricanes for us but thats another story!

DON'T take the fly drive car! The Insurance is a rip off and v.expensive. You can always take the fly drive flight and not take the car. Book your car from else where.
ALWAYS book the cheapest CAR you can get away with space wise, ie book the two door compact if there's just the two of you! Car companies will always ask you if you wish to upgrade when you go to collect the car, for an increase in cost, because they never have the small cars! Just say no you're happy with what you've ordered and they have to give you what they have.
Most always a bigger car! They just try and get you to pay for it first.

We have been doing that for years, and we've never been given a small compact....who in the US has one!!

Also always go for the tank of petrol included, usually a gold or premier option, as it's cheaper and you return the car empty.

I know a very good rpeutable cheap company I've been using for ages. If you want details PM me.
