I think a lot of people take the internet far too seriously. No disrespect to you bubbles, but you seem to be one of them. The internet isn't real life, it's just a load of people with far too much time on their hands posting whatever happens to be in their heads at that moment in time on internet forums. You should take anything posted on the net with a large pinch of salt, PMs included.

I don't know (nor care) what the circumstances are surrounding NDGs disappearance or the alleged 'life-threatening' PM, but let's be honest here, the latter should not really be too surprising when you consider her (family's) origins and the current headline news stories. That doesn't excuse the behaviour of the 'hate mail' originator - far from it - but when there's virtually a civil war going on between your home country and another, it's not a good idea to keep mentioning your origin, which is something that she frequently does.

    Interesting points, Snooze.

NDG is not Jewish or Israeli - her partner and obviously her in-laws, are. Should people be afraid to mention their family or friends, let alone their own background, in case some nutter sees them as a legitimate target?

It would certainly make for much less interesting and balanced arguments on here, if no-one or only a few people felt able to give personal examples/anecdotes, in case of random nutters.

It's the wealth of personal expeience that makes this site so valuable, unique and slightly addictive.

If 1 nutter makes everyone clam up, then that nutter has been very successful in his/her targeting of NDG. I'd rather see a situation where nutters are caught and locked up, or at least made to see that their actions have no effect. Remember:

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me -
and by then there was no one left to speak out for me.

    I agree in part Carol.
But Religon, names of partner, names of children, where you live, where your parents live and photographs are not a wise thing to give out on the net,and do not need to be given out on a site like this. Yes it may give you a more in depth knowladge to that person but this is a public site.
Just like others said you would not do it to a stranger in the pub.

No one is trying to protecting the perpertratior they are trying to protect future posters.

I agree that it is safer not to give out any personal details, Really, but to get back to my earlier analogy, as a woman, I do wear a short skirt sometimes, if I feel like it - and whilst I probably wouldn't choose to wear one late at night on my own in a dodgy pub, I'm not prepared to alter my behaviour permanently just in case some loon thinks I was 'asking for it'.

I daresay NDG has now 'learnt' the dangers of giving out pesonal information on here, but I'd doubt she was oblivious to it before, as an intelligent woman. She just presumably thought that, as a generally pleasant poster, no-one would take sufficient offence at anything she said for it to be a problem.

Sadly, that is to underestimate the nuttiness of some religious loons out there.

Very sad. In many ways, I think NDG's approach was right - by talking openly about herself, she and others like her give an insight into other worlds, thus breaking down boundaries and ensuring - in the long-term - that we all get along. As a non-racist, she had no problems marrying someone Israeli and Jewish, so it quite possibly never occured to her that other people would be so racist as to threaten her child for it.

I do agree, Really, that for one's personal safety, some info should not be given, but hope this doesn't water down the interesting debates we have on here.

Carol look I agree in the outside world do not change your general behaviour as again I am not defending the person who done it.

But the chances of reciving threats etc. increses on a site like this as the perpatrators are faceless and think they have little chance of being caught.

The only thing on a site like this although a threat is more likely to happen luckly there is little chance of them actualy being carried out as the main aim is to scare people.(that is where thankfully it is a bit different from "real life")
Like you said you would react to a situation to how you thought we can now see generaly it is very unwise to post to much personal info.

As for the debates if they were less personal it would be a good thing:)

I think people can still put information on here about themselves and yet still retain their anonymity. A lot of people know that I have a disabled daughter, that I gave up working in a job where I was home every night for a series of contracts where I was away all week, overseas and in London in order that my wife could give up her job and look after our little one. People know I have an interest in pensions and how much I have in my pension pot, that I have an interest in investing and what I have invested in, they know that I used to get lonely being away from my family all the time and so I filled all my evenings with the gym, kickboxing and socialising, people know that I have paid down my mortgage by £45k and that I am now in a position to give up contracting and get a local job again (which I have just done). They know all these things, yet they do not know where I live (apart from close to Manchester, which covers a wide area), they have no idea what my parent's house looks like, they have no idea what colour I am, they have no idea what I or my children look like they have no idea what religion my family belong to. They don't know these things because, for one thing, we're on a financial website there is no reason for them to know these things and for another, 'they' are a mixture of weirdos & decent people and it only takes one of the weirdo's to turn your life upside down.

I have no idea what prompted NDG to give away all of this information and to post pictures of herself and children (which beggars belief if I'm honest) on a public forum frequented by thousands of people, but I do hope that she, and anyone who has read this thread will have learned a lesson, which in this case, thank goodness, was not learned at too high a price.

I always criticise democracy as being the tyranny of the majority.

It is interesting to discover that China has had to resort to local committees in an attempt to stop it's citizens getting out of line.
It seems that in China every surfer has to negotiate the Great Firewall of China getting through something a bit like "Site Advisor". This tries to warn them off "unsuitable" web sites. Even there the powers that be have realised that there will never be enough "proof readers" to keep up with the "rubbish" that some citizens insist on posting [Especially as their rules probably have similarities with 1950's America - "One foot on the floor..................." and beware of "navel" oranges ......... anybody?]

It is sort of cuddly making jin-cha (policeman) into a couple of characters who have been named after pandas:D

Didn't Generali's leaving party in London end with threats via PM? Where those threats ever reported? Was it the same poster? Who were the threats aimed at? I always thought it was strange that Generali should be threatened. I seem to recall that Fc123 was left in a pub alone because she never got the message about the threats and her OH was none to happy.

Isn't it worth sharing the poster's name with the rest of us?

How did posters find out that !!!!!!? worked for Stockport CC? Did he give this info out?
