i know its a difficult year and all but PLEASE dont buy from supermarkets they are the worst flowers ive ever seen, they dont last two minutes and your girlfriend/boyfriend wont be impressed! please go to a local florist, even if you dont get roses there are plenty more flowers which will show you love them. all from £10 - £50

My wife and I buy flowers from Asda and Tesco all the time. Normally lillies that last for about 10 days. Not bad in my book and look great displayed on the dinner table.
  • There are a wealth of rose varieties to choose from to suit all budgets. Believe me, in the past, I've sent them all! Mind you, if you sent the cheaper varieties, you may not get the chance to send flowers to your loved one next year!! ;)

However, given the season and the fact that everyone thinks that red roses signify romance, rose prices rise rapidly during the run up to Valentine's Day so it may not be the best idea to choose roses if you have a limited budget. Try tulips for a change! They are very colourful and last well.

If you want a wow-factor and have a one track mind (roses, roses, roses), go for Grand Prix roses but if you budget won't stretch that far, there are cheaper varieties that will still help prove your feelings for your loved one.

Of course, not everyone can be with their loved one for Valentine's Day so going to local Tesco/Asda/Morrisons isn't always a practical solution. And having flowers delivered by someone else (either by hand or in a box) shows that you've gone to more effort.

Local florists are no doubt struggling in the credit crunch. However, there are plenty on online florists that with pass orders onto the local florists via a relay network if you do want to support local florists. Alternatively, they fulfill orders centrally (which can help to reduce prices and allows them to ensure consistent quality). IMHO, buying flowers online as with most things is convenient and cheaper.

Having tried almost every online florist in the past 6 - 7 years, I've settled for Serenata Flowers (http://www.serenataflowers.com/category/148.htm) for almost all of my flower needs. My view is that the big names take enough of my hard-earned cash already! Serenata's roses start at £19.99 and work their way up to £299.99 all inclusive of delivery. Alternatively, go for tulips and add in some chocolates and a vase!
  • Speaking from personal experience, there's nothong wrong with using online florists - I've never had a problem with their service or with the quality of the flowers. And if you actually look at the websites of these online florists, most (if not all) offer the option of courier delivery - ie: no royal mail, no cardboard boxes and timed delivery slots. Yes you may have to pay a couple of quid extra for this (most online florists only offer royal mail delivery for free) it's well worth it, and 9 times out of 10 online florists have discount codes - especially around Valentines Day. Sites like Bunches for example offer a great service, and site like www.direct-flowers.org list the special offers and discount codes available which makes it really simple to get money off your flowers.

At the end of the day, it's about supporting BRITISH companies regardless of their location within the country. And during these times, if someone wants to buy flowers cheaply from a supermarket, then this is entirely their perrogative. And last time I checked, Tesco was a British company.

    Support your local florist.

Pay £1.50/£1.75 for a Rose all year 'round.

Pay £5 for a Rose around Valantines.

Support your local florist my bottom. (For 'bottom' think of Jim Royale).
  • Hi

I got MSE's email and went to order the Dozen Red Roses for £20. This price included delivery on a date I chose. One of the comments below is correct - VAT knocked off another 42p. So I went to check out where the price I paid was £4.08!!!!! I have no idea why - I didn't enter any code. Below is the part of my invoice cut and paste as proof. Not sure if this is some freak occurence or I was a millionth customer or what. However the confirmation email has come through and confirmed the price paid as £4.08. Good luck to anyone else!

  • Can anyone recommend a company that delivers single roses at a reasonable price?

Tell you what, when i marry a partner who judges my love by the fact that I've spent the food budget for the week on some flowers, then I may spend over £25 on valentines day roses!

As for supporting my local florist, I do - year round. I go in at the end of the day and pick up cheaper flowers, i buy plants, I even buy full price bunches. But I refuse to pay 5x as much for roses on valentines day.

I totally agree! I have lovely white lilies right now from Tesco, I bought them almost 2 weeks ago and they have opened and stayed lovely for all that time. I will be getting some more flowers from the supermarket tonight. The last time I bought roses from a florist they did not last anywhere near two weeks! I don't think anyone should be making sweeping generalisations about anyone else's flowers until they have tried them...
