Hi,
I am hoping someone with much greater technical knowledge would be able to give me some advise as to what tv to buy.
I am looking to spend around £500 max on a 40"+ tv which will be good for watching Sky HD mainly sports and tv, HD/Blueray movies and occasional gaming.
I have seen these 2 which seem quite good but I dont consider myself an expert, so would appreciate peoples thoughts:
Toshiba 40LV665DB 40" Full HD 1080p LCD £399

Sony KDL40S5500U £449

Sony BRAVIA KDL-40EX401U £489 with trade in

Speaking to mates they say its best to look at LCD tv's instead of Plasma is that correct? Also what are the best makes, mainly I have been looking at Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic would that be sensible?0 -

Over the weekend I decided on a Toshiba 42RV635 - £499 at Tesco. Qualifies for the (unlikely) cash back if England win the World Cup too. I use for Sky HD and PS3 gaming/blu ray and so far I can't fault it. I've played around with the settings a little as the default settings don't give the best picture, as expected, but very happy with it.0 -
Steve1982 - did any of your mates actually say WHY?! Certainly plasmas are only made from 42" up so if you're looking for smaller LCD is the way to go. There are a lot of myths out there thrown around by LCD salesmen...0

not an lcd post, but i ordered a 50 inch plasma from j.lewis last week the panny viera range £649, i was dazzled by the 5 year gaurentee, i decided to last night to cancel as the resolution was only 1024x 768 not really optimal for hd viewing barely(although legally it is) hd at all, and a downgrade on our current lg50pc55 which is not well and cannot be cured(bad panel) so am at the moment weighing up options whilst payment is returned and am currently shooting between 2 tvs both at currys- only 1 year gaurentee but with the 10 cash for each england goal i should make at least 10 quid back lol, seriously though 80 quid back would look about rightish. so either the lg 50pk350 at 699 or the panny viera tx p50u10b 639 both full hd at 1920 res and with the currys 6may code brings them down to 657 and 600 respectively. and hopefully enough world cup goals cashback to pay for 2-3 years of warranty as an extra so no extra hit.My poor 15 yr old daughter broke her wrist i 5:eek: places tonight poor little mite was screaming in agony, all casted temp now and fingers crossed no surgery needed to fix.
get well soon honey .0 -

I have a Tevion tv in the bedroom and have never had any problems with it, but maybe it would be different if it was the main tv.

For that price I would more than recommend this:

Got one recently and it's magnificant0 -

Basically similar to what I have read that they are more prone to burn out and also use more power.0 -
I would check out the following site for differences between plasma & lcd:
http://www.which.co.uk/advice/lcd-vs-plasma-tvs/index.jsp
IMO, Plasma & LCD both have good and bad points.
The points about burn out and using more power on plasma, I think that really relates to older models, the technology has improved and they are both very similar now.
LCD is supposed to have more chance of screen burn and pixels dieing.
On Plasma tvs you usually get better viewing angles.
A downside to Plasma tvs is you cannot lie them down, (in case the glass screens bang together and smash), (as I found out when I collected mine from a store, luckily just as I was about to lie it down in the back of my car, then had to go get a van to get the tv home.)
At the end of the day it is just down to your own personal opinion, I went for a 42" Samsung Plasma for my main tv, but in the bedrooms I have 22" LCD.0 -

Beware you will not be eligible for the goal cashback offer if you use the 6may code!! Seen someone who had emailed their customer services department on hotukdeals, will try and find the link0 -
Copy and pasted from a thread on hotukdeals:
This is for the Currys purchasers that have used the 6MAY discount code and hoping to be part of the "cash for goals" promo. Thought it might be useful info hence posting it here(the other thread is quite old now so less people viewing).
For those counting on the "cash for goals" that used the 6MAY discount code, had an email reply today(word of mouth is useless if you get caught out later so wanted to get an official written response), here it is......

Hi,
I today ordered the Panasonic TX-P50U10B
Order number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
My question is, as I used the 6MAY discount code which brought the price down to just over £600, will the code rule me out of the "cash for goals" promotion?
I would really like an answer to this as soon as possible as if I might consider cancelling if the code cuts me out of the footie promo.
Many Thanks,
Lee.0 -
Asda 32" Lcd Lg Full HD £297. Many people don't really know LG, but it is just below PANASONIC on ratings, fantastic value.0
