More OU research - going back to yesterday when I mentioned this. Can I just ask those who are doing a degree or course with them if they are good and a question to everyone, are they highly regarded by employers? I have been looking into it and it seems a 50 50 split, some saying they are highly regarded and some saying they see them and put the candidate CV in the bin? I am thinking of finsihing mine in Business and Economics or an Open degree - any advice welcome please.

Andan -bet it feels nice to know OH is missing you more than he thought ;) sometimes relationships get a bit complacent with people taking each other for granted - a bit of time apart can work wonders:D

Miss Piggy - sorry to hear piglet is offside hope postman pat is restored to hero status soon;)

Debt free me- I have found OU to be really good, excellent teaching materials, good tutor support and feedback on assignments, access to a huge amount of materials online, all good from my point of view.
My employer values study with the OU as it shows a high level of committment and personal motivation/organisational skills. Most OU students complete studies in free time whilst also working full time/running household/children etc so it shows that they are able to manage time/workload successfully and deal with the pressures put on them.
    Reduce,re-use, recycle.

  • Thanks Sophiesmum

My old employer was paying for a Business Mangement HND but when I moved to where I work now they would only pay for half and I couldn't afford the other half to top it up to a degree. At the time I had been on half day release from my full time work and the HND took 3 years and by then I had no motivation so decided to take a break. Now I want to finish it and there are courses on the OU I could do to finish my degree that I couldn't if I went back to the university I was attending and I don't think my employer would let me go now, plus it looks like I could get a grant with the OU. I just want to make sure it is a good move.

I used to be an OU tutor, so looking at it from the other side of the fence, as it were. I found the students delightful, and those who succeeded (not all did - it is a big commitment) to be very hard working, focused and determined. 'Old' students with whom I am still in touch have deservedly done very well in their careers. I have never heard of CVs having been thrown in the bin because of the OU. In fact, they are rated one of the best universities in the UK - THE best for teaching and student satisfaction, I think.
  • Thanks Dawn,

The website I found was some forum somewhere that came up on a search about employers and the OU and people did suggest on there that those who said about putting CVs in the bin may have ben hair gel recruiters rather than the businesses themselves? Nice to get feedback from a tutor though so thankyou very much

Debt free me, every employer i have spoken to has regarded me more highly becuase of doing the O.U as they realise the level of commitment involved and the fact that often you are doing it alongside a job as well. I have never had anyone make a negative comment about me doing the O.U and people are more fascinated about it than anything else.

It only affects DVDs. It's really misleading because it gives you the impression that you have a choice but you don't. Really really annoying :(

    Thanks Tallie :D
  • Really? Thanks Andan. I still don't know what career what I want, but I know some things I am interested in so I think topping it up may be good.
