I have a 512 connection atm, but using the BT number checker on their site, that says i cannot get more speed due to my line length ie distance to my exchange- i do live out in the sticks. Is there anything i can do - or BT to upgrade my line?
thanks

I am in the same position and cannot get 1mb.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

if you paid more for your broadband
you could get a better contention rating (is that the right word)
i'm not sure if this actually helps....not done it myself0 -
What you need to do is some how reduce the attenuation on your exchange line. If that looks like "blah blah blah blah" - don't worry..... the only way to do that significantly is to reduce the length of your line to the exchange (which is seriously impractical).
If you can see the technical properties of your connection (eg in your router console, or modem control application - not the dial up networking status) - for a 1M connection the attenuation needs to be less than 60dB, for 2M less than 43dB.
I'll edit this later and show an example from mine here (at work now).
edit1: The joy of broadband - remote desktopping back home
Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 30 dB 31 dB
Attenuation 26 dB 23 dB
As you can see my Attenuation figures are both well below 43dB so I can get a 2M connection (should think so too - the telephone exchange is visible out of the back window)
edit 2: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm tells you more about it, http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm tells you how to get the statistics from many popular routers and modems. There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

Get satellite broadband? Fairly impractical really....
Unless you are downloading lot's, then the difference between 512 and 1 or 2meg isn't as great as some people would have you think

I agree, we can't get 2mb but have got 1mb, my neighbour got it first and said it was like doing a No 2 through the eye of a needle. Slight exaggeration, you can't see any difference.£2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far
+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.

Im going to be in the same boat when I move and I was all of a panic, till I realised that it was just over a year ago that I was more then happy with 512

Do you not get the option to book the upgrade? If you do, then BT come out and do a more accurate test. We were on the "unlikely to get BB" list using the checker, but when the engineer came out he confirmed the line was OK.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

we live in the middle of nowhere and have just got bb. where told by bt we would only get 512. we are with plusnet which provides up to 2mb. i have found by getting rid of all the ropey extensions and only using the master socket and one filter with a multi handset cordless, we now get nearly 1mb. worth a try!0
