I`m in technical sales , self employed, in a very niche area in electronics. It`s a very feast or famine industry and you have to be careful to save money when the times are good, and they can be very good. It`s not something I would contemplate if I had large commitments because of the wide fluctuations in income.

I enjoy the freedom and not having a boss.

Right now the industry is struggling and some are falling victim to the downturn in trade.

The offer/pull was made more annoying because the offer was made immediately because I was apparently "too good to lose" and they didn't want to interview the rest .... didn't want to lose me.

    How quickly things change.

All the usual "blah blah ... any other roles that come up ... blah blah" stuff, which doesn't help.

Nothing in my searches today to even apply for within a 60 mile radius either.

AIUI, if they've offered you the job they need to give you paid notice.

    Is that worth pursuing?

No. Nothing in writing. Just verbally over the phone with the agency.

The on call allowance does add up if you do not get called out.

We have 3 guys on call that get £2.50ph, last year they were called out a total of 7 times between the 3 of them.

Can be quite profitable, for doing, well, not a lot.

Not saying this is your case happymum, i suspect you are a lot busier than 2 callouts or so per year? Do you not get O-T at increased rate if you are called out?

PN...Sorry to hear that, i know you've been looking for the last couple of months or so :(

God even £2.50 an hour would be more appealing, and no we get no hourly rate for being called out, we are expected to take the equivalent hours back during our working day which is impossible. Also if called out at night why do they not pay us night shift hourly rates i.e time and a third, we dont even get our hourly rate just the 63p!
If I was not called out I suppose it would be okay to have £2.50 an hour for the inconvenience, however when on call I would say I am called out 90% of the time be it for 1 hour or 10 hours. Also even if not called out the phone calls are usually between 15 and 37 per night (37 phonecalls being my worst night ever!), so we get broken if any sleep. Its not a case of calls being vetted and we get emergencies, we answer all telephone calls, and to the lady who rang me at 3am new years day to tell me she was 3 weeks pregnant but couldn't sleep I do not class this as an emergency!! LOL

Poor you. They are still in breach of contract I guess but you'll never prove it.

    Make that unemployed now.

Just had a call, the role's been pulled.

I'm very sympathetic but secretly a little bit glad. Still want to ask for your help (can hardly call it offering you a job yet as so far it's just an idea in my head which may be completely daft...).

But I have an entirely selfish reason for being glad they were stupid enough to rescind their initial offer.

Will PM you honest - little one now over chickenpox, but obviously got all 3 at home again with the snow.

Want to do some research first to see if my idea has any legs at all.

Still, best of luck with finding other stuff - you seem desperately employable to me.

So, stranger on the internet is glad a proper job has been withdrawn, so a dodgy internet scam can be concocted between afore-mentioned job loser and dodgy predator on internet forum.

    Sounds good.

    I'll await PM.
