Thinking of getting my dog put down, too harsh??

Believe me Yorkie, all those plans occured to me too. Had I carried them out and was sent to prison, those two plus mine would be the losers.
Remember RSPCA and the Police were made aware and still the family were top of the list for rehoming.
If an animal has shelter, even a hole in a barn wall, has water, even though Ryan knocked it over most days and is fed, then that is all that is required for the welfare of a dog. That is what I was told.
All I could do was report to authorities repeatedly. The number of horses that came and went via the RSPCA, you wouldn't believe.
I'd love to name and shame, but maybe one of the family is reading.
Ooohhh no, don't say anything and cause any trouble for yourself ... like you say, if we tried rescuing an animal, we would end up in prison probably and the horrors who had it would get away with another few years of being able to abuse the poor thing.
I worked a lot with the RSPCA, and I cannot say all the centres are the same, but my God, they certainly worked harder and pulled out all the stops whenever a camera was filming them ... I know they can't help every animal, but some don't do enough ...0 -
I think we all know what the outcome of this sad situation will be anyway and those who think some of us are being harsh towards her well sorry but she did ask in her title

Well if that happens, at least we tried to show her the other options ... I mean, it's no skin off her nose if the dog is pts or taken to the Oldies or Blue Cross to live her life out, so let's hope she chooses the latter ...
Unfortunately, anyone who could contemplate putting their dog to sleep as an alternative is, as you say, not likely to do their best for their dog so I'm afraid you might be right.
If anything good has come out of this though, at least some more folks have been introduced to the Oldies website and might buy something to help fund the keep of the dogs (and cats!) they have there ...0 -
I understand ... yes, it's heartbreaking that some of the rescue centres are reversing their policies ... I understand why they have to, but I would never support one that did! Just my own personal view of course, but I wouldn't call em a rescue centre any more!!
I know what you mean but maybe I'm more of a cynic
I can understand that it may not be in an animals best interest to stay in kennels (foster homes are still in short supply) for what may be a very long time.
I have a horse that if I couldn't afford to keep him would be PTS....physically he's very healthy but mentally he's not, when he's having a bad day he can be very dangerous as he just flips. At one point I put him up for loan, very carefully vetting any applicants and it was terrifying how many people "talked themselves up" and IMHO weren't capable of handling the doppiest pony but thought they would risk not only their life and limbs but were quite prepared to risk everybody within a mile radius also! Now, plenty of people have had their say about how cruel I would be if he was shot but NONE of them are capable of dealing with him and it frightens the life out of the horse to have a handler who can't stay calm and unreactive around him and when he's scared he runs blind. Back to the point now:o but the horse charities are now advising that people take responsibility for their horses and have then PTS if they cannot guarentee them a good home and I can see the small animal charities taking that route soon.....
Sorry for going OT but maybe explains my opinion a little?0 -

No, you're not going OT at all!
I am no horse expert so I bow to your knowledge there ... of course, if the horse could be a danger to the rider, itself and the public then I can see why they advise that.
I might not like it ... *L* ... but I can see what a loaded gun an animal like that could be with someone who cannot handle it.
I think I would still try my damnedest to find someone in the horse world who could handle the horse though ... surely there would be someone with the expertise?
(Sorry ... I am the eternal optimist aren't I?!) ... but yes, I really do understand your point.0 -

i was going to post tonight about my dog, she is a 16 year old lab/collie cross
Sasha....
To my mind my dog, Sasha is dying, she's done in....and its only my selfishness thats stopping me from taking her to the vet, but I can't do it. She;s eating fine, she still goes out for walks albeit very slowly and at times she's still the puppy/dog she always was
am very sad typing this cos she;s got her head on my lap, she just ran up the stairs to bed, probly quicker than I do
but she's old, and I can;t/dont want to take her to the vet, though I know I should, should I let her die in her home or take her to the vet to go asleepcheerio hen0 -

mini_huny_monay - I think your dog sounds elderly but fine - is she in any pain?
If she eats well and still enjoys life, enjoy it with her - she does not sound ready to go yet, if she is content. Being old is not an illness in itself, I know some people who are old and crotchety who still enjoy life and have lost none of their zest for it.0 -

It is so sad when our pets aren't as spritely as they were ... if she is eating and still getting around, albeit slower, is she in pain do you think?
Reason I ask is because I had two greyhounds who ended up with arthritis and they couldn't get around as well as they used to ... someone told me about a powder called Runaround which you can get from doghealth.co.uk ... it has green lipped mussel and goodness knows what in it (all natural stuff though) ...
I gave my two it on buttered bread every day and within a week I noticed a tremendous difference in them. They were getting around a lot better, and within one month they were dashing here and there, being giddy kippers and enjoying life again.
Am not saying it is a miracle cure, and only you know when your dog has had enough and is really suffering, but if it is a mobility problem, then I would be tempted to try that.
On the subject of where to have your pet pts ... I would always say at home. It WILL be more expensive though ... but at least they don't have to go through the stress of going to the vets, waiting in the surgery if the other animals there are noisy ... all mine have been pts at home and they have been relaxed and passed away very peacefully and calmly.
I've seen it from both sides, having been a vet nurse, and I can honestly say, given the choice, I would always have the vet come to the house.
Take care of yourself ... {hugs}0
