Thinking of getting my dog put down, too harsh??

Yes, I live in the real world - but in "my world" I believe you should not choose to kill an animal simply because it no longer fits in with your lifestyle.
This animal deserves a chance of happiness - Lord knows, from the OP's story so far, it's had precious little during the last few years of her admitted neglect!
When getting a pet she should have remembered that it would not always stay young, healthy and cute and cuddly. Pets age, may have physical and emotional problems and may sometimes need a lot of attention and care. The OP should have considered this...... Pets aren't just objects, they are living creatures.
Face up to your responsibilities and find the dog a home and a chance of a better life!:hello:0 -
I have seen people taking their dogs over to crowded open air raves more than concerts, funfairs and generally places where it's a) not fair on the dog b) not fair on the people walking past the dog
If you know what I mean.0 -
Tiddlywinks sadly many people have no regard for animals these days.0

I hope the OP reads a few more of these posts before making her decision.0

I'm going to have to leave this thread alone as its really winding me up - I keep thinking about the things this poor pup is doing in her desperate bid for abit of attention - my dogs dont have to fight for attention and funnily enough they dont poo in the house or nip people - funny that really.0

But we were saying that when the dog bit the kids, the OP did nothing ... when the dog was very ill, the OP chose to keep the dog going, but when the dog takes up too much of her time (well, obviously not, cos she admits to not giving it attention), she decides that's it, rehome or put down.
That's the point we were trying to make ... that when the dog is a bit of an inconvenience, the OP thinks it's ok to take its life.
The OP, as far as I understood the thread title and the posts she made, clearly doesn't think its "ok" - otherwise, why ask if it was "too harsh?"
If the OP had made up her mind that it was a clear case of PTS, she wouldn't have posted on a forum asking? It would have been done and dusted and we would be none the wiser.
As it is, she has asked and has been offered alternative solutions.
Now, I'm with you, if there are alternatives, go for it! What I am not in agreement with, is making the OP feel even more wretched than she's already admitted to feeling over a difficult dilema.
My dog died of natural causes many years ago now, so none of the advice would be pertinent to myself; but, as I've said in an earlier post, even I've learned something from some of the constructive responses.

While I feel as strongly as many people who have posted on this thread that the dog hasn't done anything wrong my concern about her being rehomed is
1) Rescues are already over run with younger healthy dogs that in theory should be easier to rehome.
2) The dog has obvious health and possibly temprament problems that further reduce the odds of her finding a home quickly and easily. How many rescues have the resources of both time and money to rehabilate this dog?
3) the OP has already said that the dog wouldn't thrive in kennels.
4) Private rescues are fraught with danger for the dog as there are people who "talk a good talk but don't do the walk" so to speak!
Yes I agree that all the above are possibly fixable but I'm not sure that very many people/organisations would be prepared to do so when it came to the crunch. I also believe that pet owners must take responsibility for the problems that they have created rather than just palming them off to someone else. If the dog was pts, in an odd way that secures her future as she cannot be stressed or neglected any longer either in her present home or while waiting for a new one....hopefully it would be peaceful death.
Just to say, that I don't condone the OPs behaviour but I think it would take more guts to pts rather than pass the dog on.0 -

I think the problem most of us have is with her even considering putting the animal to sleep because she feels unable to give it any attention ... yes, you are right, she has asked for alternatives, but what has rankled with us is that putting an animal to sleep for selfish reasons of our own is something we would never dream of doing ... !!
Can I just say though ... that Oldies.org.uk ... it isn't just a place to rehome pre-loved oap's ... they do actually have items for sale, so people can order gifts, badges, pens etc from them and still help the oldies! Please go have a look, folks! Just buying a couple of car stickers and pens would make a difference if we all did it!0
