Thinking of getting my dog put down, too harsh??

Paprika,
Thanks but there is no way we will be getting another pet (although we do have goldfish - do they count?). I'm going to have four children under five in a month or two and both me an OH work full time (think I'll be hopefully coming back four days a week). We have enough on our plate. Puppies might be cute but god are they hard work! ( i suppose children are the same!).0 -

Can you lurk around in here a bit and tell that to some of the people who come on determined to buy a pup (often of a very demanding breed!) for the 'benefit' of their small children ???
I don't think the reality hits most people that the cute little bundle of fluff is actually a pooping, peeing, chewing and nipping bundle of hard work till they find it has pooped on the toddlers play mat, chewed the bottom of the kitchen units, eatern the remote control and tiddled everywhere imaginable!!0 -
here here ! We have jst brought a weimaraner puppy and whilst shes the cuteist thing on 4 legs it is hard hard work (i have a 2yr old daughter)
im lucky in that i dont work so im at home all day otherwise i wouldnt even have cosidered getting a dog
u have to be firm yet kind and have supervised play with the child and dgog then when pup naps i spend quality time with daughter and visa versa when daughter naps or wathcing dvd i spend time with pup grooming /training/cuddling
sometimes i feel like cutting myself in half lol but its worth it i brought this pup to be part of our family so im determined to put as much effort into her as needed
weve even booked to take her on hols with us all in auguest (she will be 6 mnths) hopefully have some basic obendience by then :@)
Im taking her out to toilet after ever nap/playtime/mealtime etc and i have to say as much as i love her it is dam hard work dont get a pup unless your 110% sure you have the time paitence and dedication needed
ohh and if you do decided to get a pup buy some throat lozenges lol i must say "no" "leave it" "down" at least 100 times a day lol
and make sure u look into the breed your buying before hand to make sure there temperment etc is what u want we know very well that weimaraners can be hard work and are a dominant dog but weve had large dominant breeds before hand so felt confident to deal with this bread
and make sure u go to a reputble breeder most good breeder you will sign a contract stating that if for any reason in the future you do not want the dog it has to be returned to them

Hi all,
Molll went to her new home on Tuesday afternoon. I phoned the couple last night and they said she was fine, no bother, took her out and the rest of the time she just lazed about. They've had no agression or poo problems. They are already talking fondly about her so I hope it works out.
Much thanks to foreign correspondant, and the rest of you.

Lynne...i am so pleased Moll has found a new home! I have followed your story and i have to say what a kind and brilliant owner you were to her. It must have been so difficult for you, and i understand what you must have been going through as i have 4 children close in age myself, and especially when they are tiny they are all consuming! I am so pleased that you have decided not to get another dog, as you have enough work to do. You could always get one when the children are old enough to help you with it.
All the best with the new babies.

We had our dog put to sleep when her back legs started failing ,she was about 14 and i did'nt want her to suffer, now i regert it i think i should have given her more time.
Anyway as for your children ,we all know how children are with animals they don't understand how to love and care for animals i often tell my son he must allways be nice to the dogs .
So your children have probably upset the dog countless times so you can't blame the dog.
In my opinion your dog would be much better suited in a retired persons home
where he would receive plenty of attention and be away from children ,he would be a different dog and be really happy.
So i would contact a rescue centre and agree to keep the dog till they find an appropriate home many will do this match a home with a dog so your dog would not go in kennels.
Please think about this i feel it s wrong to say im having more children so the dog must go or even to think about it.
Many Tears Rescue Centre in wales is an excellent rescue centre they would take him if you were going to think about putting the dog to sleep.
As for the person who keeps her dog outside please don't leave her outside in the winter surely you have a tiled kitchen floor or you should get an inside cage for at night for her accidents.
Hope this helps sorry but i hate to see animals put to sleep theres always an alternative when situations change.
Many Tears is worth a call !0 -

absolutely!
So many goldfish are treated as disposable pets, given away for pennies etc, then housed in a small bowl or tank with little or no filtration - in reality each goldfish needs a lot of tank space (primarily because they are herbiovorous and poop a lot!) - unfortunately because they are not cute or cuddly they are often overlooked as counting as 'real pets' so people buy them without doing ANY homework.
I'm glad you got the dog sorted, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

If you feel your dog needs another home i can't recommend enough many tears rescue centre in Wales no dog is ever put to sleep only in exceptional circumstances even the really poorly dogs are sent to permanent foster care or adopted untill they have no quality of life if you llook at the website you will understand they are really cared for and putting to sleep is not an option for any dog .0

Hur. I can vouch for this one too. We got our Rolo at a very young age.....with four kids.
Now, she's delightful, don't get me wrong, but there have been times when I just sat and cried because it was so exhausting! She was a fireball, for sure.
I can honestly say, I don't think I would EVER get another puppy. Ever. Oh, she was rotten cute, but by god not so cute when she was nipping, peeing, pooping, chewing (brand new pair of £40 shoes, gone in seconds.....same with a £100 pair of brand new faith boots. She had a heel fetish)
Much more pleasant now she's a teenager!
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

Very well said, couldn't agree more.I think goldfish must be the most abused pet. They are too cheap and a decent size tank and all the extras are expensive so people don't bother giving them what they really need for a decent life. When i look at mine ,swimming around in my two large ponds,i feel very sad for all the ones who don't have any quality of life.
To be honest i do believe all goldfish ,apart from the fancy ones(the breeding of which i don't agree with anyway, bubble eyes etc) should be in a pond.0 -
i can't recommend enough many tears rescue centre in Wales
Just had a look at their website and they are obviously doing great work...
It makes me angry though to see all of the dogs who have been used for breeding and the just tossed away when they are no longer useful to the scum that use and abuse them, never showing them any love and affection0
