When I reported one of the spammers the other day (I won't mention any names) I simply sent the spammer's username to abuse and included in the email a link to all of his posts, and a message saying they are all spam. Just checking back in my emails... and yes, that was fine by abuse, I presume they can just mass-delete posts/threads at the click of a button anyway.helen21 wrote:Edinburghlass people are just bouncing ideas due to the bad spate of spammers about and especially last nights episode of the virus, dont think anyone wants peoples comps to get infected. Also whilst i am here just wanted to know if we know it is a spammer do we actually need to be reporting everypost or once i have reported the one, do i need to report all the others or can i just say once on each thread that the username is reported as over the last week i think i have reported about 50 posts but these are from only three people, you know what i mean

what was this persons username? Just so i can be careful not to click a link from them.
Thanks. Carrie.Accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.0 -

whilst that may be true, they have rarely been around, if at all, late at night when a lot of these problems have been kicking off. ideally, we need someone to cover the wee hours...we all know how easy it is to click on a link by accident, its one thing if its points for some silly web game user, but another when its a very nasty virus
as a temporary measure, perhaps a clear cut "address book" would be a good measure, written in black and white for all to see who to contact regarding a problem on board x,y or z, who can deal with spam/abuse and so on and so forth...rather than having to trawl through various posts on various parts of the board trying to figure whether you should be telling MSE JOEBLOGS, Forum JOEBLOGS or Admin JOEBLOGS.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

Hi folks
I very much appreciate all your suggestions. However we have an abuse team who are paid members of MSE. I simply can't do 24 hour coverage. The stated aim of the site is to react to abuse within 48 hours. We all know in practice it is much much quicker than that often in less than an hour during the days.
Perhaps we can have a multi-spammer hot email for regulars to use so then the abuse team know there's an easy one to deal with first (i will talk to them about how they feel about it)
However if its over night. Please stay calm - we all know there are prats everywhere, and just write your big SPAM posts and we'll do the best we can
Sorry i cant do more

I don't think we really need someone just to remove spam. Any time someone spams these boards a member always notices and posts that it is spam, so surely no-one would click on the link if it happened to be a virus.0

Poppycat wrote:That moron who did it last night needs reporting to a higher authority as what they did is falls under malicious misuse of a computer. Knowingly sending viruses is an offence and they did it delibrately as they spammed the forums, and not just a n00b not knowing what they did.
Sorry about spelling mistakes updated firefox today and spelling checker no longer works
Open up your extension list, right click on your spell checker and choose "make this work" (or whatever it says) and then do the dictionary too.
I did this earlier have no problems.

Often, the mindless 20 or 30 spam posts at a time are obviously posted by Americans, who despite the time difference are obviously more brain-dead than readers here in the early hours of the morning. It looks annoying for a while, but there aren't actually many people online by then.
I think that last night, though it was presumably more malicious in intent (I didn't follow the links to check) there were enough people searching this idiot's posts and replying on threads to warn all bar the first few people arriving.
So whilst it seems infuriating at the time, perhaps it isn't worth getting too wound up about. Martin could hardly pay premium overtime or shift rates for a relatively slack period, although bridie's offer looks good especially from a former BG.0 -
Thanks but I cant get it to work its all greyed out on spellbound program and libaries. Cheers anyhowsqueaky wrote:Open up your extension list, right click on your spell checker and choose "make this work" (or whatever it says) and then do the dictionary too.
