So its the stores fault you didnt read the receipt? The onus is on you not the store.

yup, of course it is the customer fault for
1)not remembering every stores different policy with regard to returning anything. They must also
2)make sure they read all the small print on their receipt every time they shop in that store, as the policy may have changed since they last went shopping there, and
3)they must keep every receipt they ever receive and keep it safely presumably for 6 years ( tax rules), and while we are at it, I think customers should
4)memorise and be regularly tested on each major retailer registered office and their VAT registration number. - because that should be on the receipt as well

p.s anyone from Gap reading? do they still deliberately print out receipts which 'degrade' ? All the print on my old Gap receipts fade away to nothing, so heaven help if you want to return say a coat several months later which fell apart and was clearly not fit for purpose.

what a bummer - spent ages typing a reasoned reply to Keith and my computer turned itself off!

In brief then - yes you are right I should read the receipts, but who does, as I should also read all the small print on insurance policies, holiday bookings, loans etc.

If someone has read what I wrote and is now aware that there is a returns cut off date with M&S then its all been worth it.

Even my wife, her mom, my mom, my sisters and a girl who served me at the checkout at Sainsburys (amazing what crops up in conversations), all big M&S shoppers, were unaware of this change of policy.

    Consider my hand slapped.

Next time I'm stuck in a queue while someone read his till receipt I will call out your name. :D

All taken in good heart my friend - pity about the pc malfunction though as it was an epic

    sully still shopping at M&S

at least this proves the point - give me good service and I will tell 10 people, give me poor service and I will tell 50 - be aware M&S!

I have found the same thing with Curry's receipts - so we take a photocopy of the receipt as soon as we get home.

WELL HOW LONG DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO OFFER A NO QUESTIONS ASKED RETURNS POLICY? They did and now they don't. Not a problem.

IMAGINE HOW MUCH LONGER ALL THE QUEUES WOULD BE IF THEY SPENT 30 SECS TELLING EACH CUSTOMER THIS. IT IS WRITTEN ON YOUR RECEIPT. I know it now and maybe you knew it then, but I didn't know it at the time. A little notice on the visa card payment machine would suffice " Please be aware that you have 90 days from date of purchase to return an item"
So you are a receipt reader then? Imagine how long the queues would be if each customer examined their receipt to check for the small print? ho ho
WHY ARE YOU AN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCE COMPARED TO ANY OTHER CUSTOMER? Because I asked to be
THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD PLAN AND YOUR KIDS WILL LOVE IT Yes they do and I highly recommend it. Everyone gets a few little pressies then they get to chose the time and date, mind you I might take a leaf out of M&S's book here and put a 'must be claimed by date' on it. Oh they can moan but I can always point out that they should have read the small print. Bet they don't do it next year though? Which is the point of my post.
  • Well I read the receipts and I have to say the Marks receipt is the best I have ever seen regarding returns policy as it gives the exact date for a full refund.

Its not exactly hard is it..reading a returns policy. Its normally very clear and on the back of the receipts.

Good idea, why did I not think of that ...?
Probably because I was too busy revising for my test tomorrow on VAT registration numbers. M&S = 232 1288........forgotten the last 2 digits again....doh !

Seriously. Very good idea, and if I was buying a TV or washing machine I would make the extra effort, and make sure I keep the receipt somewhere safe.....but when I am buying a couple of t-shirts from Gap, or some pjs from M&S.....;)
.....I suppose I could always take a digital photo of M&S receipts and store the details on a memory stick, keep the memory stick in a fire proof safe, lock the safe in a ........

Off on a complete tangent (tdimans reference to Sainsbury's reminded me) has anyone else got a receipt from Sainsbury's where half the details are on one side, and the rest on the back ?
Talk about saving the rain forest.....I thought the till must have cut the receipt off early until I turned it over.( I was looking for the VAT number of course !!....660 4548.... for gotten the last 2 again - back to revision I think)
Oh, and Sainsbury's don't have a returns policy printed on their receipts, but their registered offices are in Holborn.:p

p.s I have had 2 dealings in the last few days with stores returns policies.
I was told in Boots, that they have NO cut off date, and indeed returned something MONTHS after I bought it.
Similarly Asda gave me a full refund on something which I bought MONTHS ago.

I was very pleasantly surprised with both these incidents. Neither of the sa's I dealt with batted an eyelid at the age of the receipt ( you see I do try and keep them for 6 years;)) didn't query the amounts, ask why I hadn't brought them back earlier, need a supervisor or manager to deal with me - nothing.
Just pleasant, efficient staff and money handed over with a smile.

In both cases I had expected them to say, Sorry, cannot give a refund. If they had I would have accepted it with good grace.

I just wanted to give praise for good customer service when I meet it, and highlight it on this thread where staff attitude has been questioned. Both staff ( one male, other female) were under 25, so maybe good customer service, and good staff training are not things of the past.
Thumbs up from me to Boots and Asda
  • I can't believe this thread, how can anyone complain that returning something within 90 days doesn't give them long enough??? Lots of shops offer far less than that, why not complain about them

You should take it back to the shop you bought it from and ask for a refund! :p
Sorry I couldnt resist! hehe :rotfl:
