do you have a bank statement (ask your sister) with the amount on? can sometimes be used as a reciept.

Bank statement will show that they spent £19.50 in M&S but doesn't prove they bought pjs. Thats why they wont accept it

I have had similar experience with M&S
But, when I eventually found the receipt, it had gone over their time limit, so I still couldn't get the money back.
I use M&S &more card, and have offered to bring statements in, but staff not interested. It doesn't matter if you take in bank statements or credit card statements, and presumably someone in M&S should be able to drill down from a Transaction on an M&S card to an item you bought and the price you paid.........but they are not interested.

BUT, surprised by OP comments re TESCO.
I find them about the worst for returning things.
Their receipt do not specifically identify an item - no bar code numbers like M&S or Asda, just "Top" or "Jeans".
Take back top and Jeans, with receipt, in date, but since reduced and they say these items are not the ones listed !!
For example, I buy a top and Jeans for say £10 each.
I return the clothes to Tesco, I have the receipt, but clothes now scan at £8 each.
Therefore sa logic is Top and Jeans I am returning, (with labels still attached showing £10) are not the same jeans and top on the receipt.
    I am a liar and a thief.

Also, woe betide if you are over the 28 days, whether you have the receipt or not, because you will not get any money back, you can only exchange, and not for a cd, or wine or food, no - has to be clothing.

I once bought a pair of Jeans for £25, returned them within week without receipt - refused to give me £25, as now £15.
Eventually found receipt showing £25, returned to store, but now over the 28 days, so could only get an exchange - now for £8!!
After much arguing, decided to bite the bullet and make the best of it.
Didn't want anything, so just randomly picked a bag for a friends birthday - £8

Found out my friend really wanted a nice red bag to go with her new shoes
Returns to Tesco with £8 bag, select a nice big red bag costing £12 and heads to cs.

Bag I am returning now £5:eek:
I had no receipt to show it cost me £8, as when they do exchanges they refuse to give you a receipt.

    End result
Friend didn't get her Red £12 bag,
£8 new bag from Tesco ended up in the Charity bag
I have spent £25, and have no jeans, no bag, and am very wary of ever buying clothes at Tescos:mad:

she gave me the gift receipt which showed £19.50, but then I put this in my purse and have since been on holiday

Perhaps best not to hang on to stuff that needs to be exchanged.

Further to The Old Bag's post above, I did read once that most stores can search their transactions by your (the buyer's) credit card details if they know the date and approximate time. This should bring up the original receipt showing the price she paid for the pyjamas.

I don't know whether M&S would be prepared to do that or not but it might be worth another try....

Great first post! You sign up to have a go at M&S because you have mislaid a receipt when at the end of the day you know they are right.
    A bit harsh !

I know they can do it tesco, as I used to work there and did it for some customers, but it does take a while, and some people just didn't appreciate it if you left them 5 minutes to get it, would usually come back to them moaning and groaning and checking their watches.
At the end of the day receipts and gift receipts are your responsibility, its not the stores fault or the SA's fault its yours!!!

Thanks all for your replies.... I did expect them to have some kind of discretion in clearly genuine cases, but sadly I am wrong. How British retailing has changed. If these had been bought from a small independent shop, I'm sure I might have had a different response to the one M&S seem to work to in their 'big corporate bible'. They DID have different sizes in the store, and they would NOT let me exchange the PJ's for a size that would fit. Yes it was up to me to keep hold of a miniscule piece of paper, but the labels were all on the goods, there was no dispute they were from M&S and the labels had not had any reduction labels stuck onto them. To this end, I think I will just give them back to my sister in law and see if she wants them, as they might just fit her. I am just dismayed that there is no discretion at M&S these days and they do not appear to be reasonable in letting me change the PJ's for a size they have in stock, that will fit.

How are SA meant to know who are genuine or not?, reduction labels can be removed very easily. It was your mistake not M&S's.
If they are £5 then that is the value you can exchange for, they are not stopping you from getting a pair of PJ's in you size, you are just refusing to pay the difference.
