Sorry, I haven't read all the posts, so this may have been mentioned.
M&S are not obliged to take back any goods unless faulty, so getting a refund of even £5 is a gesture of goodwill.
Lesson to all, why bother buying Xmas presents? It either won't fit, won't be appreciated, and you can buy it 75% off one month later.0
