  • Yes thats a point so for me if I decided to move or remortgage then I would start keeping statements as soon as I decided that but for the moment I have no real reason to bother keeping them especially not 7 years worth.

Got to be honest I keep 6 years, but that is because of how I earn a living and advice from my accountant. 7 years is a little much, as you have said as well you can start to keep them before you remortgage - amazing the number of people who don't though.

I'm not sure why people keep bank statements if they are not self employed and if they check their banking is correct monthly online?
Anyone who has to complete a tax return should keep statements for 7 years as the tax man is always right.

OH is self-employed and we're told by his accountant to keep his records for the past 6 tax yrs (in practice we make it 7) plus the same for anything in our joint names as it also involves him; but for me as a private individual stuff in my sole name only needs to be kept for 3 yrs. It cropped up on a similar thread a while ago, and there was a comment about the 3 for me:
If you get divorced you may be asked to provide financial information covering the last 5 years.
This doesn't apply for us, but just passing it on :)

PAYE - no need to keep bank statements for any length of time, employers problem.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

Except this is only applicable for employers collecting for employees - for those of us who have income beyond our regular wages or salaries, we still have to fill out a tax return to make sure we're paying the right amount.

Natwest are a nightmare when trying to get those silly little ring binder folders from them.

I have a few accounts with them, and on 2 occasions when I first opened the accounts, they didnt send me the statement folders. When I tried contacting them, they seemed very reluctant to send me them because I was told "they cost money to produce". Talk about being tight.

I notice that you work in IT. Any chance of writing a program for me based on SQL that might help me communicate with my 15 year old son? ;)

    Prompt Teenage Translator Program
    select a.language = b.language
    from adult a
    inner join teenager b
    on a.name = b.name
    ;

    SQL> /

    SQL> no results found
