    I use a 10" enamel plate
  • Thank you very much. Do they cook ok on dinner plates? Just until i get an enamel plate. I have a camping store nearby, should i try them or would i be best buying online? Are the camping ones the right ones? Sorry for all the questions but i spend a fortune buying pies £3.89 in my shop for a HM one.

When I say 8oz mix I mean 8oz flour not 8oz pastry by the way.

I used 8oz for top and 8oz for bottom. I musta did something really wrong.:o

Hi Nettles I would think that you could use an earthenware plate safely.

Any plate or saucer. Depending on how deep you want them. (But not plastic)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Nettles, it will almost certainly work out cheaper to buy locally once postage is taken into consideration! As to whether they cook okay on your dinner plates, well, it depends on the plate ;) Sorry, I know that sounds sarcastic but it's not meant to be, it's just that some bear up better than others. An enamel one is probably preferable, even though many ceramics are okay in the oven, they're not really designed to be used that way and they can stress and fracture over time.
  • Me thinks i shall buy a couple of enamel one's. I dont mind paying postage as i dont drive and i live 10miles away from a town. Now to decide where to buy them from.
Thanks you very much for all the replies.
  • Would it be best to buy from Millets or would the Ebay ones be ok?

The lids of pyrex dishes are good for 'plate pies' as well - though you don't get quite as good a 'rim' on the pastry. They give a good depth though :D.

If you ever go into charity shops, check out their household items section - they often have odds and ends of baking things/crockery.
