  • Some brilliant recipes here. Very inspiring. I especially like the bit about alcohol. Just another idea to save even more money (on heat). If I was planning to make a pie and I had some space in the oven while I was cooking tea, then I'd bung all the ingredients (mince, onion, gravy, carrots) in a small casserole and cook this bit while the oven was on. Then I could use it the next day in the pie.
  • Gosh this thread has brought back memories. Now my Dad yep my father was the cook in our house. He used to make these plate pies after a casserole. The portion that was left over make these pies. The one we were going to have next day was on a pyrex plate but the other was made on a silver foil plate and placed in the freezer. If we were lucky we got a sweet one like apple pie or jam latice which pleased us kids

If you like the alcohol idea and it works for you then your next step should be chilli and fruit, chocolate, chilli combines with almost any fruit and goes exceptiionally well with chocolate. Paprika is a superb compliment to lemon or orange.

    Only if you swallow it.

I suppose it depends on how much you eat, in a balanced diet I would say it has it's place, especially for growing children, certainly better than crisps/kebabs/chips, burgers etc, as I said earlier it is also a useful way to smuggle healthy food into your childrens diet, when have you ever seen a kid break a pasty open to examine it's contents for example? They don't they either like pasties/pies or they don't they don't generally give a hoot what's in it. The right amount of eggwash and seasoning/sugar on the outside and down it goes. Even twigs are fattening if you eat too many of them.

  • Everything is fattening in excess!

In the cold weather and even colder economic climate, a homemade savoury meat & potato plate pie eaten with some baked beans is one of the most warming, filling and economical meals around
