Went to Tesco this morning and noticed vitalite no longer says suitable for vegans. I'm not buying it again now and am back on pure. Also Tesco value soya milk no longer says its vegan - I was concerned about the vit D in it so bought alpro. Does anyone know if it's vegan or not now?

To be fair I did say about this:
Some information about vitalite for you
    http://www.vegansociety.com/newsroom/index.php?/archives/8-Vitalite.html
    http://www.vegansociety.com/newsroom/index.php?/archives/36-Vitalite-is-not-registered-with-The-Vegan-Society.html

According to this the vegan society do not endorse this product incase you have seen this product with the logo on it. I am unsure if it now vegan however due to all the drama so I'd b very cautious about buying it if I were you. It may be vegan but there is a good chance it isn't.
That was on the 19th of last month (so over a month ago) but it looked like no one took me seriously .

I'm not sure about Tesco soya milk as I don't shop in Tesco anymore (haven't for a long time) but I'll look for you so you know if you would like?

I just wanted to recommend a cookbook, The Single Vegan by Leah Leneman (republished as Vegan Cooking for One).

I second that. I would also recommend her other books: 365 + 1 Vegan Recipes and Slim the Vegetarian Way. Mine are old and tatty now but I still use them all the time.

  • I think the thing with Vitalite was that whilst they had made that product dairy-free they had just stuck the official vegan society logo on it without actually going through the vegan society's testing. This made the logo being on there illegal so they had to whip it off pretty swiftly. The vegan society doesn't just check the ingredients but also ethics and all kinds of things (details on their website). Thus, lots of things that are suitable for vegans don't necessarily have vegan society approval (made by not so nice people) or the company can't be bothered because its too much hassle or it's too obvious that it's ok for vegans.
With vitalite i'd double check that it is still suitable for vegans before buying as that's a product where it isn't obvious at all whether its vegan or not. As for the soya milk i'd just take a quick look at the ingredients and not worry too much.

On the food ideas thing - I tried out khichdi yesterday evening. It's an Indian dish of beans and rice and is apparently considered to be a complete comfort food and if often what they use to introduce babies to solids. I took the recipe from here http://tofufortwo.net/2009/04/03/mung-beans-with-basmati-rice/

Had it with pan fried spring greens and garlic (yummy). It was very nice and creamy tasting but I wanted a bit more pep so I had it with tabasco sauce!

Twinkle_star while I do agree with most of that with 'hardcore vegans' the type of vit D will be a concern (one is and one isn't that places use) as will if they test on animals. I am just saying and not having a go. It depends how far you want to take it really  .

Edit: people would call me 'hardcore vegan' as I am VERY careful for example but for others they do what they can as a vegan.

  • hey doom_and_gloom,

Didn't think you were having a go, I was mostly just explaining the disappearance of the society logo as I read a news article about it on the site. No worries.

Doom and gloom - I did check out those links, the vegan soc said they were hoping to give the logo soon and as the product said suitable for vegans on it I was happy to buy it but won't be now it isn't labbeled. Thanks for the links coz they kept me checking and may not have realised it is no longer suitable otherwise. :)

Will def be checking out the sainsburys salad cream - it's something I really miss.

    Hi all
I'm not sure whats happened here but my post seems to have disappeared - anyway, Just a mum, sainsbury be good to yourself salad cream is vegan it has no egg or dairy in it, I checked on the sainsbury website and it is on their suitable for vegans list...it is yummy.
Veganclaire: I can recommend a suitable alternative to vitalite, it is by Rakusens called Tomar margerine (found in the kosher section) and it has the vegan society logo on it, it has a really nice taste to it.
It's a shame that companies don't stick to their recipes and we have to trawl through many ingredients lists to make sure it's suitable, sometimes there will be something in it that you have missed no matter how careful you've been but I will say for me personally if I find that something I've eaten turns out not to be suitable (yes, salt and vinegar walkers in the pub on a saturday night :) ), all I can do is learn from it and not buy that product again.

Edit: oh my post above has reappeared, sorry for posting twice :)
