Going vegan......old style?!

For those days when you just feel like something "normal" (can't think of an appropriate word so that will have to do) I can recommend a bar of Ritter Sport Chocolate Marzipan to go with a cup of coffee. No baking involved whatsoever!0

I'm hoping you can all help me... my boss has just returned from sick leave, and we thought we should take him out for a meal. As he is vegan (and the rest of the team are dyed in the wool carnivores, but that's tough!), I need to find a decent vegan restaurant in/near Windsor/Maidenhead/Bray... Any suggestions would be welcomed!
Check on here:

There is some places listed in windsor. One is a veggie mexican with vegan options and others have vegan options. So you may find something on there.
Hope this helps

The marzipan, peppermint and plain chocolate ones are all vegan. Fry's can't guarantee that there is no dairy contamination in their chocolate cream. To be honest I prefer the Ritter anyway.0 -

We are vegetarian but trying to be completely vegan, it isn`t always easy. My son`s girlfriend has been a vegan for most of her life, and even she says sometimes it isn`t always possible, she has to be content with vegetarian fare.
We tried the Redwood Cheezly last week, the cheddar style. We liked it, it does taste a little different, but in a butty with tomato etc, we found it to be really nice.
I think the hardest thing for me to give up is butter, I can`t find a vegan substitute that I like to use as a spread. I have bought a book of vegan recipes and that seems to make cupcakes etc with oil, so that may be the way to go. Dunno what I will spread on my toast though!

vegan mayo with a little sprinkling of yeast flakes, put under the grill for a minute or twoAugust grocery challenge: £50

Actually according to Ritter's own site they list butterfat in the peppermint one now. It's such a shame when ingredients are changed.

Oh, I must have old stock then. I checked on the back and it didn't list it. The Vegan Society are going to have to change their listing too - it's in the Animal Free Shopper.0 -

On an unrelated note I think its time for more nutritional geeking:D
I've been reading up about iron today because as I am of the female persuasion I require more of it than my my OH. According to the FSA's Manual of Nutrition a healthy adult body contains around 3-4g of iron but you are recommended to consume between 8.7g (males) and 14.8g (females) each day as only about 20% or less is absorbed.
Plant-based sources of iron tend to be less well absorbed than animal-based ones but can still provide a perfectly adequate supply. Also, low levels of vitamin C will derease your absorbtion of iron as will tannins in tea. So, drink up plenty of orange juice:D
Interestingly the FSA also state that about 50% of iron in the average British diet comes from cereals and only 14% from meat so it shouldn't be too worrying to replace that 14% with other iron sources.
Here are few nice sources of iron (taken from the vegan society website - here).
Examples of amounts of foods providing 2mg iron
Pistachios - 14g
Roasted cashews - 32g
Whole lentils - 57g
Boiled chickpeas - 95g
Wholemeal bread - 74g
Sesame seeds/tahini - 19g
Dried apricots - 59g
Spinach - 125g
Thus, a woman would need to eat about 8 of any of these portions and a man only needs 4. So a sandwich made with wholemeal bread, hummous (chickpeas & tahini) & salad using baby spinach would be a super iron-filled lunch :T
I may have one now!
I'm not sure but I think spinach may be a bit of a myth as an iron-booster. Apparently whoever measured it put a decimal point in the wrong place or something. In any event, very little of the iron in spinach is useable as it's locked up in a compound the body can't break down very efficiently.
Great thread by the way, I'm not vegan or even veggie but I don't want to eat meat/poultry/fish every day of the week and often the recipes are a bit more interesting!
I do think everyone should have less meat, especially red meat as it's so heavy on resources. To my mind we should just pay more for good quality, sustainably resourced meat/poultry and eat a lot less often and smaller portions.
Unfortunately, can't give it up altogether as we all love it so much and fake cheese/tofu don't do it for me......:o0 -

Thanks for the warning. That's such a shame. Maybe I'll have to bulk buy some before the new stock arrives:rotfl:
I suggest as many people as possible fill in a comment form to request they stick to the old vegan recipe as it might make them reconsider:

It worked for Green & Blacks, who stopped making vegan dark choc last year (I used to love their Maya Gold). After many of us wrote in, they finally promised to consider installing a second set of equipment to be kept for vegan products, which should come into place in a couple of years.0
